  1. Home NETWORK server support: the fundamentals Nicholas Johnson Eastern Kentucky University Department of Technology

  2. OUTLINE • Motivation- Provide a home server for family use • Introduction- Home based server • Problem Statement- Reduce costs of implementing the average corporate server. • Proposed solution- Design of Network, pictures of hardware and costs • Results – Home computer providing the functionality of a corporate server. • Conclusion- research + how to videos + trial and error+ strategizing = Success! • Future Work – Adding more roles to Windows Server 2012 2

  3. MOTIVATION • Most server hardware, software, and administration costs can get out of hand!! • The costs include, but not limited to: • 15 to 25 percent overall cost for administration. • Windows Server 2008 R2 for 5 users - $1000 or $4000 for the Enterprise edition. • Microsoft SQL Server - $900 • Citrix Presentation Server : over $3000!! • Server hardware = $400 to over $1000!!! • Total cost = WAY TOO MUCH!!!! 3

  4. INTRODUCTION • Implementation of a Home Server • Network Design • Inexpensive Hardware • More effective Network Security 4

  5. PROBLEM STATEMENT • How can one design a cost-effective, user-friendly server system? 5

  6. Assumptions • Servers are commonly seen in enterprise settings such as that of a college or workplace. • Servers are difficult to set up and costs are too high. • Servers provide an extra layer of network security to your system. 6

  7. PROPOSED SOLUTION • Designing the network • Laying out the used hardware (photos are included) • Installing Windows Server 2012 and its roles. 7

  8. Proposed solution

  9. Proposed solution Server PC - eMachine ET1331G-05W Refurbished Desktop PC - AMD Athlon II X2 250u 2.3GHz, 6GB DDR2, 750GB HDD, DVDRW, Windows Server 2012 Evaluation 64-bit Cost: only $389.00 plus tax

  10. Proposed solution • Client PC - Dell Inspiron 546 MT (AMD Sempron LE1300 500GB/2GB) • Cost (from friend): $100

  11. Proposed solution • Linksys WRT54G2 Wireless-G Broadband Router • Cost: $65.00

  12. Proposed solution • Time Warner leased line bill: • Cost: $76.00 / month.

  13. Proposed solution • Ethernet cabling • Cost: Approximately $50 • Image taken from http://www.justin5mins.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/all-about-ethernet-cabling.jpg

  14. Proposed Solution • Windows Server 2012 Evaluation disc: • Cost: FREE!!!!!

  15. Proposed solution • Install the following functions: • DHCP • DNS (With static IP address 192.168.1.106) • Hyper-V • WDS (Windows Deployment Services) • Active Directory

  16. RESULTS • A successful home server network was created • Costs only rose up to $682!! Way better than over $5000 for server equipment. • A wonderful sense of accomplishment. • Mastered the basics of setting up a server network. 16

  19. CONCLUSIONS • Despite trial and error, I have managed to place together a secure server • I have learned so much about the details of setting up a server environment and how useful it can be in the corporate environment • I have managed to save my freelance company thousands of dollars. • I feel this Capstone will help me as I pursue my career at NASA and other endeavors 19

  20. Conclusions • As for the assumptions: • The server I set up only cost $682 for everything. This can save any small company or home server user thousands of dollars each year. • Servers can appear in home environments as well as corporate settings. • The security aspect of the server system is true. The Active Directory proves this theory by setting up a username database in which the user must input their credentials

  21. FUTURE WORK • Possible server roles can include, but not limited to: • File and Print Services • Group Policy • Advanced Windows Firewall Security • Volume Activation 21
