  4. Existing Bridge Elevations Bridge No. 02217 (SB) Bridge No. 02014 (NB)

  5. Existing Bridge Condition Sidewalk and Deck Deterioration Extensive Patches in Bridge Deck

  6. Existing Bridge Condition Cracking in Underside of Bridge Deck

  7. Design Parameters / Site Conditions • Superstructure Replacement • Long Term Detour Not Allowed • 2 of 4 lanes must be maintained on West Nursery Rd. • Large median existed between MD 295 NB and SB lanes (79’, 87’ including shoulders) • Vertical underclearance extremely low (15’-9”)

  8. Decision Analysis • Musts • 2 of 4 lanes maintained at all times • Able to carry HL-93 live loads • Maintain existing vertical under clearance (15’-9”)

  9. 8 Alternatives were Initially Evaluated • Deck Replacement / Superstructure Replacement / Complete Replacement • Widening / No Widening • Single Stage / Two Stage Construction Sequence

  10. Decision Analysis Matrix

  11. Selected Initial Alternative: Total Superstructure Replacement Matching Existing Bridge Geometry • One phase construction utilizing temporary bridge • 12 month estimated duration of construction • Reduces lane capacity by 50% for duration of project • Requires construction of temporary roadway, reconfiguration of ramps • Requires right of way

  14. Bridge Pilaster

  15. Rehabilitation Cost Comparison Temporary Bridge • Estimated cost of temporary bridge = $800,000 • Reconfigure ramps • Temporary approach roadway • Right-of-way • Demo over traffic • Reduced Traffic lanes Total cost = $800,000+++ SPMTs Bid Prices • SPMTs = $450,000 • Grade Median = $5,700 • Rebuild Shoulders = $120,000 • Temporary Towers = $290,000 Total Cost = $865,700

  16. Road User Costs • Total cost of reducing West Nursery Road from 4 lanes to 2 lanes = $2000 per day • Reduced lanes for approximately 7 of 12 months = 7 x 30 x $2000 = $420,000

  17. Public Outreach • Mass mailing of project brochure • Public outreach meeting • Community liaison met individually with major businesses in corridor • Presented at BWI business partnership

  21. Design Process Details • Design, Bid, Build Process • Bridge moving company had to be one that was preapproved • Extensive coordination with moving company throughout the design process and with Utah DOT • Moves will take place on two consecutive weekends • Roadway Rentals

  22. Roadway Rentals A traffic study was performed and determined that the following closure time for West Nursry Road and detour of MD 295 were acceptable: MD 295 Friday 11 pm to Saturday 6 am Saturday 11 pm to Sunday 8 am West Nursery Road Friday 10 pm to Sunday 8 am

  23. Roadway Rentals During Designated Period Roadway Rentals Outside Designated Period

  24. Established Bid Item

  25. Example During weekend no. 1 when moving the existing bridge over MD 295 SB into the median, MD 295 SB is opened at 9 AM Saturday instead of 6 AM. All other time constraints in weekend no. 1 are met. During weekend no. 2 when moving the new bridge over MD 295 NB into place, West Nursery Road is opened at 6 am Sunday instead of 8 am. All other time constaints in weekend no. 2 are met.
