How does this quote apply to the 20th century?

Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire • 1911 • Typical 1900s factory • Employed 500 women- Mostly Jewish and Italian Immigrants • Women were paid $6 a day. • Doors were kept locked in the building to promote worker efficiency. • Located on the top three stories of a 10 story building. • Only one fire stairwell. • Based on this information alone what problems can you see with the factory? • What would PROGRESSIVES have wanted to reform about this factory?

  3. Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire Fire broke out on the 8th floor. Most on the 8th floor escaped, but workers on the 9th and 10th floors were trapped. Women tried to escape by climbing out their windows. Many fell to their deaths. 146 workers died

  6. Results • Samuel Gompers (AFL) and Robert F. Wagner (Mayor of NYC) put the company on trial. • After a 5 year trial new factory safety legislation was passed. • Review: What were labor conditions like in the 1900s? • For Men? • For Women? • For Children? • Safety and Health?

HOMEWORK Write a minimum of two paragraph essay on labor at the turn of the century which addresses the following: Using evidence from class notes about conditions, strikes, unions, and standards for children, safety, and health explain what the average worker’s life was like. Research progressive reform movements. Write about one reform act which addressed one of the above issues. DUE TUESDAY SEPTEMBER 27!
