  2. Seychelles Seychelles consists of an archipelago of 115 islands in the south-western Indian Ocean. I,500 km/930 miles east of Africa 300 km North-east of Madagascar Land area-445 sq.km EEZ-1.3 million sq.km Seychelles has the smallest population of any sovereign state of Africa; Estimated mid-year population for 2009 -- 87,298 Population density of 178/km or 458/sq mile

  3. Population Population structure is thus: • 30.9% below 20 years • 41.6% 20 to 44 years • 19.6 % 45 to 64 years • 7.8% above 65 years Total males -45,022 Total females -42,276 Life expectancy for males– 66.8 years Life expectancy for females –77.7 years

  4. Health Profile The Health System is based on Primary Health Care approach. Government is the major provider of health services which is tax- financed and free at all points of service. . Seychelles has achieved impressive health care indicators; • Infant mortality rate:12.9% for 2008 • Registered No of Maternal death from 2007 to 2009 is 2 • Immunization coverage- 99 to 100 % • Deliveries by trained personnel- 99.9 %

Health Profile Non-communicable diseases is the main burden of diseases with an upward trend in mortality rates for the last 10 years; • mainly in cardiovascular diseases • Neoplasm • Chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases • Endocrine, nutritional and metabolic conditions Leading causes of mortality are: • Cardiovascular disease • Neoplasm • Respiratory conditions • Injuries

Organization of Health services • The ministry of Health and social development is the principal provider of health services in Seychelles. . • The health system is divided into 3 distinct levels; Primary, Secondary and tertiary care. • . To ensure accessibility to health services. The country is divided into 16 health districts, each with a health centre • Secondary Care consists of hospital care in a main referral hospital of 240 beds and 3 cottage hospitals. • One hospital of 43 beds caters for chronic psychiatric cases, one with 155 beds caters for elderly care and a 29 bedded ward caters for rehabilitative care.

  7. Organization of Health Services Private health care services are also provided through 23 private medical and paramedical practitioners. Human resource for health The total staff of the ministry of health stood at 1752 end of 2008. The largest proportion of employers fall in the category of other health auxiliaries, which consists of non-clinical support staff such as clerical, drivers, accounting, amongst others. Categories such as medical officers, nurses, pharmacists and dentists are considerably short-staffed

Nurse Association of the Republic of Seychelles • The Nurses Association of the Republic of Seychelles (NARS) was registered in May 1977. • Total membership to date -190 • Members are from all clinical specialties and nursing cadres • A committee is elected every two years to run the affairs of the association. • Minister McSuzy Mondon, presently the minister of Employment and Human Resource Development has been nominated as the patron of the association. • The NARS does not have an annual budget. • Annual subscription of its members and fund raising activities sustain the association.

Regulatory mechanism/ Legislation practice: • NARS is regulated by a Constitution (which is under review) as it has been in existence since its inception • Vision Promote nursing as an autonomous, recognized and valued profession. • Mission NARS is committed in facilitating and supporting nurses in their professional development so as to move the nursing profession forward

Activities and projects • ICN/MSD mobile library for health personnel in the work-place as well as in the educational institution • Sensitization on men’s health and cancer in community centres, work places and schools • Foot-care in elderly homes • Conference, work-shops & presentations for nurses • Training of ICN/MSD library managers and users • Diabetes screening activities in work places • Special clinics for men

Nursing Regulation • The Seychelles Nurses and Midwives Council (SNMC) is the statutory/legal regulatory body, governing the practice of Nursing and Midwifery in Seychelles. • The Council was established in 1985 under the Nurses and Midwives Act 1985. (The Act is currently under review) • The Nurses and Midwives Act is the legal framework which guides the Council in administering the professional regulations as a means by which order, consistency and control are brought to the profession and its practice for the purpose of ensuring quality care. • NARS is represented on the council and members are also co-opted as necessary on ad-hoc committees to address nursing issues

Challenges • Generating adequate funds to sustain the organization activities. • Recruitment of nurses to join the association • Increasing nurses participation in the associations projects • Sustaining educational activities • To have a conducive office which is open full time for nurses • Capacity building of committee members.

Sustainability plan • Strengthen the net work with local and international organizations • Submit projects for local and international funding • Intensify campaign to recruit members • Sound fundraising activities, such as sale of second hand books, craft etc • Market the association so that it becomes more visible • Strengthening the working relationship with the Ministry of Health and Social Development and private practice • Work in partnership with other non governmental organization for common goals • Articulate the Value of nursing and promote a positive image of the nursing profession

Experiences on SANNAM affiliation • Creates opportunity to facilitate networking within the region and with other international organizations • Sharing experience on best practices amongst members in the network meetingCapacity building of members • Support member organization to build capacity of nurses and midwives • Keep members update with new scientific and strategic development on health care delivery
