  2. Ghunna FAST Tajweed Intensive - Summer 2012

  3. What is Ghunna? • When the letter “م” and letter “ن” have a Shaddah(ّ) then they will be recited with Ghunnah(nasalization). • The length of nasalization does not have a precise count but comes with experience • You have to prolong the sound of the م or ن to apply ghunna. • These are the ONLY TWO huroof on which the rule of ghunna will apply. FAST Tajweed Intensive - Summer 2012

  4. How to read Ghunna • Example 1: • Normally, the word اِنَّ is read “inna”. • However, that is incorrect. Ghunna applies on the letter نas it carries a shadd. • Hence the correct pronunciation is “innnnna”, i.e. prolonging the “nn” sound of the ن. • Example 2: • The word ثُمَّis normally read “Thumma”. • But when we apply Ghunna to the letter م , the correct pronunciation becomes “Thummmmma”, i.e. prolonging the “mm” sound of the م.
