  2. What is advertising? A tool used to get people to do, buy, or believe something.

  3. Why advertise? • Advertising gives people information to help them decide what to buy. • Advertisers use strategies to get peopleto buy their products. • Advertising also helps pay for the cost of programs on television, on radio, and online.

  4. Advertisers want our money! • Kids under the age of 12 spend $200 billion a year on snacks, soda, entertainment and clothes. • What do you spend your money on?

  5. Where do we see ads? • In print – newspapers and magazines • Commercials – radio, television • Outdoor ads – billboards, vehicles • Web – Websites, Social media like Facebook, Twitter

Advertisers try to sell their products to a certain audience. • Audience – A group of people who advertisers think will buy a product. • Advertisers look at age, gender, interests, family, and lifestyle when they design an advertisement and decide where it should run, when it should run, and how it should be designed.

  7. Strategies advertisers use • Humor: Making consumers laugh to catch their attention and make an ad more memorable. • Using words like greatest, fastest, best ever, amazing and incredible to get consumers excited about a product.

  8. Must-have: The technique of portraying a product or services as something that consumers must have to be happy, popular, or satisfied • Emotion (fear) appeal: Showing a product or service as a solution for something people worry about, like bad breath, or acne, or body odor.

  9. Association: Showing images in the ad that associate the product with popularity, beauty, family, patriotism, wealth, physical fitness, the outdoors, and fun. • Sense appeal: The technique of using images and sounds to appeal to one or more of the five senses. For example, an advertiser might use the sounds and images of a hamburger on a grill.

Should there be restrictions on advertising to children? • Ages 12 and under: The amount of advertising aired during children's programming should be limited to 10.5 minutes per hour on weekends and 12 minutes per hour on weekdays -- still more than for adult prime time; • Most food advertising on children's TV shows is for fast foods, candy and pre-sweetened cereals. Commercials for healthy food make up only 4 per cent of those shown • Ads also often portray unrealistic body images.

In 2009, the average youth watched one alcohol-promoting commercial on TV each day, an increase of about 71 percent from 2001. • Researchers found that the average number of alcohol ads seen by youth increased from 217 in 2001 to 366 in 2009, which is higher than the rate of adult exposure to ads. • American study found that youth who saw more alcohol advertisements drank more on average, each additional advertisement seen increasing the number of drinks consumed by 1%.
