  2. Who are we? • SUYAM Charitable Trust was started and formally registered under Trust Act in August 1999 by a group of young college students, experienced social activists who were in this service field since 1987.

  3. Objectives of Suyam • We     •  Work to improve lives in poor communities      •  Support youth in education and career guidance      •  Develop social consciousness in youth      •  Assist individuals in distress (social and personal)      •  Network with likeminded groups and institutions to expand its impact • We are especially concerned about preventing social problems relating to     •  Child labour      •  Begging      •  School drop outs      •  Early marriage      •  Teenagers      •  Families       by stressing child-centered education to facilitate holistic development of the child

What do we do - 1SIRAGU MONTESSORI SCHOOL • Siragu, a Montessori inspired innovative school, is a learning space located at Palavedupettai village, via IAF Avadi, Chennai-55. • Mainly started towards rehabilitation of begging children and street children. • We facilitate a life of dignity for children who have been marginalized and /or are deserving, and try to prevent the occurrence of child labour ; • Siragu provides Montessori inspired innovative education to the children from families who have been, for generations, begging, scavenging, farming, pig farming, manufacturing or working in brick kilns, and at the same time attempts integrates this rural community with the school. • Having classes from LKG to VIII Std • Providing free education to 350 children during June’08 – May’09 (80 children stay in the school as hostel inmates. • We provide them free Education, notebooks, food, uniform, school bags etc.. • At Siragu we encourage students to learn and express themselves independently, and thus bring out their inherent potentials and focus on overall development

What do we do - 2EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS FOR CHILDREN AND YOUTH • To prevent child labour, and to prevent drop outs in Corporation Schools & Government Schools in Chennai, Suyam • Runs 19 education centers in 16 schools @ Pazhaverkadu & adjacent villages (Pulicat Bird Sanctuary & adjacent villages) • provides monetary support for higher education for 'deserving' students

What do we do - 3Nadaipathai Pookkal Program (Flowers of the Pavement) • This program is for the families having settlements in Palavedu Pettai, but residing in pavements around Kilpauk Water Tank for around 30 years. • These families are involved in begging-because of various social problems. • Since 1999 we adopted these families (initially 50 families). We provide the community in Kilpauk and Palavedu Pettai with education, medical facilities (including family planning counselling), counselling for de-addiction, child care, resolution of family problems, and with empowerment through employment generation (self and external employment) schemes

  7. What do we do - 4Post Secondary Education • We identify higher secondary school students, lacking monetary support but showing potential for higher education, and provide for their education.

What do we do - 5Bharathamatha School • Run a school for slum dwellers “Bharathamatha Nursery & Primary School” @ Vyasarpadi, Chennai – 39. • 115 children are the present beneficiaries • Recognised by Govt. of Tamilnadu • Recently Suyam taken over the management of this school • Collect nominal fees from the students and provide top quality education • Need to increase the school strength and motivate the slum dwellers to give their children the best

What do we do - 6 AWARENESS PROGRAMS • Suyam tries to create awareness about social work, student involvement in social work, social issues especially those relating to beggary, and self awareness among students, social workers, physically and/or mentally challenged people and the general public. • We also celebrate various occasions to spread social awareness.

What do we do - 7 HEALTH RELATED ACTIVITIES • We organize as well as participate in health camps in various urban, rural and slum areas. • The camps include medical camps, blood donation camps, cataract operation camps, eye donation camps, and nutrition and hygiene camps. • We also visit and counsel AIDS patients

What do we do MORE… • ASSISTANCE TO THE PHYSICALLY CHALLENGEDWe assist, guide, and refer people to various organizations after identifying their specific needs.   We also donate materials like hearing aids and wheel chairs besides providing educational support. • ECO-FRIENDLY WORKWe plant trees, undertake ways to preserve water and recycle waste water, and try to promote organic farming in Pakkam, near Thiruninravur. • VISITS AND DONATIONS TO HOMESWe visit homes, spend time with people-children and old people-put up recreation and awareness activities, and donate materials (such as medicine)

Units Of Suyam • SIRAGU MONTESSORI SCHOOL We provide innovative education for the economically deprived in and around Palavedu Panchayat (near IAF Avadi, Chennai) and to street children in and around Chennai, to provide them a life of dignity. • DIKSHAWe conduct personality development programs for schools, colleges, and in communities (rural, slum and any other).   We build up on people's inner potentialities to equip them to face their problems. We emphasis study skill learning, career counseling, stress management, emotional balance, self motivation, goal setting and awareness of current happenings to deal with the realities they face.. • RAKSHAKWe are a team of 500 blood donors. We donate blood in rural areas where access to blood banks is limited, and to those who need blood from rare blood groups • RECREATION CLUBWe are a well trained student group from colleges in Chennai. We provide recreation and awareness programs (such as mime shows, awareness songs, debates, painting etc.) in children homes.

SyllabusSiragu Montessori School • We do our best to ensure the QUALITY OF EDUCATION WE CAN PROVIDE • Montessori Method of Education from Pre KG to V Std • Our own designed innovative education concepts been adopted to provide top quality education to children • Striving towards affiliation from ICSE, New Delhi. Once ICSE recognition received, we will be first school who got ICSE syllabus for deprived children in India. • We have our own written books in various topics and designed new style of note books with various concepts. • Also adopted various education methods – Rishi Valley method,Glenn Doman methods and different International concepts.

Methods to evaluate the outcomeSiragu Montessori School • The regular school pattern answers the most of the queries in academic side. • Monthly meetings with parents and teachers help to evaluate the performance of children and parents’ queries are answered. • Fitness of project, condition of project is determined based on the present day-to-day activities of the Project. • Experts from education field and various other fields are brought to school very often, one expert one month basis and their feedback on our performance given us a clear idea about where we stand and where we need to correct ourselves.

  15. People Behind SuyamTrustees V. Uma, Ph.D., MSEM, M.Sc (Maths), MBA, Managing Trustee • Uma's dreams of creation of a self sufficient society. • She has been doing social service from her 8 th std. • While in college she formed a team, VISHAL RANGER, to do social service. • Her work has won her many awards, such as Governors Award (Raj Puraskar) 1990, Best NSS Volunteer (1992-1995), Special Award from Udhavum Ullangal, Vellore for organizing a blood donation camp, and Special Award from PAALAM, Chennai. In 1999, along with some friends, Uma founded Suyam. • As its full time worker, she does most of the ground work for Suyam (and Siragu)-including managing Suyam, formulating plans and activities for Suyam and implementing them. • She also runs “Abani Institute of Excellence” for pre-degree and degree students

  16. People Behind SuyamTrustees • R. N. Muthuram, MSEM, M.Com, TrusteeMuthuram has been doing social service since he was thirteen. He has been a part of Suyam, and also Siragu, since the beginning. Having 17 years of experience in the field of accounts, finance, personnel, PRO, projects in various companies. Muthuram since 2006 turned as a full time social activist and takes care of accounts, administration and personnel & PRO activities of SUYAM. • K. J. Prabhu, BE, Trustee Prabhu has been a trustee with Suyam from the beginning. He has always fully supported Suyam's initiatives. • Fracin S. Prabhu, BE, TrusteeFrancin has been an active volunteer with Suyam since the beginning, and became a Trustee in 2003. A significant suggestion was for Suyam and friends to adopt children rescued from child labour.  

  17. People Behind SuyamTrustees • R.Jagannathan, TrusteeJagan is a B.Com & DEIM graduate involved in social service for many years. He involved in Running  a tuition centre since 1997. Nearly 1000 students in and around the village are benefited thru this. Scholarships given to eligible and poor students. Managed the school "Shri Vishwa Vidyashram" from 1999  - 2003. Conducted various exhibitions based under extensive researches in vedic science, old literatures etc. in the school. A lot of innovative methods have been introduced and well implemented in the academics side. Conducted medical camps like blood donation camps, eye donation awareness camps, cataract camps, general medical camps etc.

Parthiban's Manidhaneya Mandram, Shristi, Help First Society, Banyan, Anbu Ullangal, Monday Charity Club, Good Life Centre, SET Sornammal Educational Trust, Snegidhan Trust, Ecomwel, Olcot Memorial School, Asha for Education, Help to Live, I Volunteer, Maps, Alpha to Omega, Nandhini Voice for the Deprived, CSIM, Anandashram, Indiasudar, India Vision 2020, Kaingarya, Thuligal, Smile Welfare Foundation, KCRDS Kaveripakkam, Nesam, Raja Rathinam Educational Trust & many other NGOs in India.

  19. Impact of our work.. • Suyam, over the past few years, has been achieving some success in its aim to prevent child labour. • Significantly, in Palavedu Panchayat most children are in school. We had also placed twenty children from the street dwellers community in Kilpauk in SET Anne's School for Excellence, of whom 16 are now in Siragu • Additionally, we conducted over 30 free personality development programs for corporation schools and children's homes to counsel the students to stay in school.

Impact of our work.. • We also monetarily supported more than 20 students to pursue higher education, who are now turned as qualified nurses, accountants, computer engineers, electrical engineers, physical assistants and pharmacists. • In the Palavedu Pettai community through the empowerment programs some families have started their own businesses and are taking care of their children • We also assisted 10 families through our de-addiction programs. • We monetarily supported surgery for many patients who had renal failure, and provided post-operative care to many others.

Impact of our work..UNDER OUR CHILD AND YOUTH WELFARE PROGRAMS • In Siragu Montessori School , Palavedu Pettai350 children are the total beneficiaries of the academic year 2008-09, out of which more than 100 children were rehabilitated from begging, rescued from streets & child labor. 80 children are hostellers. • In our Free Tuition CentresWe have 800 students in 20 centers (40 students in each centre) • Through our Educational and Awareness Programs in Corporation High and Higher Secondary SchoolsWe counselled around 1100 students in Corporation High Schools in Seven Wells School , Wall Tax and Chindadripet and in Corporation Higher Secondary School in Alwarpet. • Through Monetary Support for Higher EducationWe provided education to 9 students to pursue their graduation and diploma courses

Impact of our work..UNDER OUR EMPOWERMENT PROGRAMS • WOMEN EMPOWERMENT PROGRAMRun a tailoring unit and deployed poor and destitute women and partial handicap to pursue quality training and improve their tailoring skills and given immense training on various stitching standards and styles and also pay them monthly salaries. • Push Cart ProgramBenefited 3 families in Shastri Nagar • Tailoring TrainingBenefited 10 families in Palavedu Panchayat and Mint • Phenyl Making TrainingBenefited 75 families in Palavedu Panchayat and Veerapuram

  23. Where Individuals can help • All our activities are funded mainly by donations. These can be even Rs. 10 or less. We still need much more contributions-in kind and currency-to sustain our activities. • Any amount, however, small will help. Sustained contributions are especially useful, since we can then stop searching for sources of monetary support especially for our recurring expenses. • You can sponsor a child’s education, child’s food progamme • You can put us in touch with Corporates who can provide us with things like infrastructure development, uniforms, notebooks etc…. • You can also volunteer for administrative work, field work, to lecture, teach, provide feedbacks, and in any other ways that they can help us

Presently we have plan to develop the school to Higher secondary level and aim to send 1st batch of children to appear in X std board exams in 2010-11 academic year.
