Mid-America Regional Council • Council of Governments • Metropolitan Planning Organization • Formed in 1972 • Created by an inter-local agreement between counties and the region’s largest cities • Board of Directors of 33 local elected officials • 170 Staff (24 in Transportation) • Programs in Transportation, Emergency Management, Homeland Security, Regional 911, Environmental Policy, Early Childhood Education, etc.

MAJOR BENEFITS • Well-coordinated timing plans save time and keep traffic moving smoothly, especially during rush-hour periods • Vehicles idle less at intersections, reducing emissions that contribute to ground-level ozone, Kansas City’s main air pollutant • Fewer unnecessary stops and starts wastes less gas
