Competitive DeploymentsGeneral Characteristics • Most use dedicated middleware products to map XML or HTML output from host apps into the appropriate markup language for the specific device (WML, HTML), using information in the device db. • Most have a server-based “device db” such as screen size, browser type, support for color, etc., for each device supported. • Oracle and iAnywhere provide mini databases on WPDAs to provide great functionality, but must be synchronized to the host db. • Often support a variety of devices – cell phones, pagers, RIM devices, iMODE, Palm OS. • Little intelligence or business logic is available on the devices.

  12. Jargon – Deployment Concepts 1.) Jargon’s tool platform (Writer) allows rapid development of stored procedures on http-enabled middleware, written in the language of the app (e.g. Oracle PL/SQL, Progress 4GL), for efficient interface to the app’s data. 2.) “Stored Procedures” work with most HTTP compliant middleware. These procedures run applications specific code, which do all the access and return information to our client. 3.) WPDA programs are XML files which are downloaded in seconds from the web server, saved on the device, then executed by our deployment engine (Reader). Javascripting allows for advanced editing, lookup, verification, and store/forward capabilities at the device level. 4.) All wireless apps are stored on the HOST in XML files, client UI and Javascript included. Apps are served automatically when needed, then cached on the Palm db for quick access.

Packaging (SOAP), Description (WSDL), and Discovery (UDDI). Jargon adds 2Q03, but no better than what we are doing now.
