  3. Grid Project • Computation Grid • Distributed small computer make them a supercomputer • Translation Grid • Distributed translators perform the large scale of the translation

  4. KLDP – Korean Linux Doc. Proj. • KLDP(Korean Linux Document Project) • http://kldp.org • They translate English Linux document into Korean • They are voluntering • Translation Process • Pick an article to translate at http://www.linuxdoc.org • Download DocBook sgml source code of the article • Announce the start of the translation to prevent the effort to do same work. • When they finish the translation, Email the result to cvs@kldp.org

  5. Translation Company do not use IT Technologies • Tools in Use : Text Editors such as MS-Word, HWP, etc. • They do not utilize Glossaries well, even though they made them. • Translator’s softwares such as Trados and Transit are introduced but very expensive

  6. Translation Portal • Anyone can join the project on the World Wide Web • Collaborates with Divide & Conquer strategy • Translation Grid • Support Translation Workflow • Draft(Machine Translation), Translation(Translation Expert), Review(Target Reader) • Provide Translation Memory Utility

  7. Things to be expected • Standardization and Acquisition of Terminologies • Aligned Bilingual Corpus • Translation Memory • Breaking down the barrier to the information • Speed up getting foreign information

  8. Fields to be applied first hands • Linux related documents • Localization of Open Source Software • Old Classics in Chinese letters • … • In the field that Public gain and cultural importance motivates the translators’ volunteering

  9. Possibilities • Volunteers post the translation of CNN News on BBS and WWW • Active involvement of translators for KLDP(Korean Linux Document Project) • Individuals translate small portion of the document, but the whole document are being translated by the group.

  10. Strategy and Effects • Support the KLDP’s activities • Provide them with translation portal • Set up the pilot service • After establishing the solid system, transfer the technology to translation companies • Maximize the public gains by minimize the information divide • Feed the translation companies with NLP technologies
