  3. Introduced in January, 1975 the MITS Altair was the first 8080 based  kit microcomputer. According to the IEEE, "Between 1964 and 1968, at the RCA David Sarnoff Research Center in Princeton, New Jersey, a team of engineers and scientists led by George Heilmeier with Louis Zanoni and Lucian Barton, devised a method for electronic control of light reflected from liquid crystals and demonstrated the first liquid crystal display. Their work launched a global industry that now produces millions of LCDs." In 1984 IBM introduced the Enhanced Graphics Adapter (EGA) Until the early 1980's most were boxy video display terminals (VDT's) and had an attached keyboard. In the 1970s displays were blinking green and text based. The first commercially usable LEDs were developed in the 1960's 1929 Vladimir Kosma Zworykin invented a cathode ray tube called the kinescope - for use with a primitive television system. In 1981, IBM introduced the 4 color Color Graphics Adapter (CGA). In 1987, IBM introduced the Video Graphics Array (VGA) display system.

  6. CRT The heated filament is in a vacuum created inside a glass tube. The ray is a stream of electrons. The anode attracts the electrons coming off the cathode. The stream of electrons is focused by a focusing anode into a tight beam and then accelerated by an accelerating anode. This tight, high-speed beam of electrons goes through the vacuum in the tube and hits the flat screen at the other end of the tube. This screen is coated with phosphor, which glows when hit by the beam.

  8. LCD Liquid crystal displays work by blocking light. A LCD is made of two pieces of polarized glass that contain liquid crystal between them. A backlight creates light that passes through the first glass layer. An electrical current cause the liquid crystal molecules to move to allow varying levels of light to pass through to the second layer of glass and create the images that you see.

  9. LED LEDs are modified LCDs. They replaced the fluorescent lamps with a LED backlight.
