  1. Snapshots An Important Revision Technique

  2. Snapshots • Zooming in to look closely at a person, place, thing, action, etc. Freezing a moment, slowing it down, and creating a picture with words.

  3. How do I create snapshots? • Use the 5 senses (see, hear, smell, taste, touch) • Give physical details; the more detail, the more LIFE you give to people, events, etc. • Tell it in SLOW MOTION (in movie terms)

  4. “Writers need to develop the habit of seeing the world in close, physical detail.” Barry Lane

  5. What is an example of a snapshot? • “The piney aroma of fresh earth moved into my nostrils, and I breathed in deeply, allowing the serenity of the canopy of leaves and other forest foliage to be taken in, in one delicious breath. The crunching of my shoes only added to the orchestra of squawks, twitters, chirps, hisses, and buzzes that aroused from the forest floor, perfumed by crimson flowers that were dotted like blood stains along the gravel trail.” from “Remembering”

  6. Your job is to… Look through your personal narrative, memoir, or personal essay and FIND places to INSERT snapshots(person, place, action). On a separate sheet of paper, create 3- 4 snapshots that you will add to your personal narrative. Good luck!!
