  2. DEMOGRAPHICS • SIZE OF MASSACHUSETS • BORDERED BY THE CARIBBEAN SEA ON THE EAST, MEXICO ON THE NORTH & GUATEMALA ON THE WEST • POPULATION 225,000 • 30% Creole • 11% Mayan Indian • 44% Mestizo • 7% Garifuna • 8% Foreigners • ENGLISH IS SPOKEN HERE!

  3. History of the Project • Rotary district 6510 took on in 1977. • Over 215 children, some with multiple operations, have been helped to attain a happier and more productive life since that time.

  4. How It Works… • Dr. Jack Sheridan, orthopedic surgeon from Shriner’s Hospital in St. Louis, donates his time to conduct free clinics to identify children who can be helped. • Rotary pays their transportation to Illinois. • Host families provide free room and board and transportation to & from the hospital. • Surgeons at Shriner’s perform the needed treatment. • Children stay until appropriate follow-up is done.

  5. What I Want to Accomplish Today… • In February of 2004, Hal Harsin accompanied the team from here to Belize to observe the clinics, first-hand. • What you are about to see is the result of this trip.

  7. The Good Shepard Clinic, Benque • This is the entrance to the Good Shepard Clinic which was the first clinic attended. About 15 to 20 children are seen at each clinic visit here.

  9. These two dwarfed children have been followed in the clinic for years. The girl, who is 12 years old, was brought back to have her legs straightened.
