  2. Sponges Study Guide Sponges are members of the Kingdom Animalia. They represent the Phylum Porifera. Most sponges are marine. Some are found in fresh water. Sponges live most of their lives attached to a substrate. There is no line of symmetry to the body of sponges. They may be termed asymmetrical. Pores, or holes, within the sponge allow water to pass through to the inner chamber. The cells of sponges are specialized to perform certain tasks. However, the cells are not organized into tissues. Choanocytes are flagellated cells that line the internal chamber of the sponge. The beating of flagella produces water currents. This allows for small organisms and organic particles flowing in the currents to be engulfed by the choanocytes. For protection and shape, sponges have spongin and spicules.
