  3. Who is doing the research • Indeginous researchers • But poorly funded by local institutions • Collaborative research • Through North-South institutions • Major funding agents • Industries • On a limited scale • Their support through North instuitutions

  4. Major challenges • Poor infrastructure • Inadequate human resources • Research monitoring infrastructure • IRBs, etc. • Ethical issues • How to involve children • Issues of consent among women • Influence on policy makers

  5. Some research gaps • Appropriate interventions for children as they grow up • Impact of adolescence on ART and vice versa • Why PMTCT uptake remains low • Even when it is provided free of charge • Gender issues that influence ART adherence • Both in short term and long term
