  1. Avancemos 2 5.1 - Negative tú commands

  2. When Are Negative Commands Used? Negative Commands are used when you tell a person to not do an action. For Example: If you tell someone NOT to do something then in Spanish the negative command would be used. If you want to make a tú command negative(don’t…), you have to change the verb completely. You should follow a3 step process:

  3. How to form a negative tú command 1) Go to the yo form of the verb. 2) Drop the “o” (you are now left with the stem) 3) Add the opposite tú ending. (For “ar” verbs add –es. For “er/ir” verbs add –as). 4) ***DON’T FORGET TO ADD THE ‘NO’ IN FRONT OF THE VERB!

  4. How to form a negative tú command However…if a verb is irregular in the “yo” form, it will also be irregular in the negative tú command. Examples: (go verbs) Poner yopongo ( I put) No pongas (don’t put) Salir yosalgo ( I leave)  No salgas (don’t leave) Traer  yotraigo ( I bring)  No traigas (don’t bring) (stem changers) Probar yopruebo ( I taste)  No pruebes ( don’t taste) Pedir yopido ( I order)  No pidas (don’t order) Dormir yoduermo( I sleep)  No duermas(don’t sleep)

  5. Práctica: • Don’t come ! • Don’t boil the water ! • Don’t leave ! • Don’t mix the garlic ! • Don’t add oil ! • Don’t make the cake ! • ¡ No vengas ! • ¡ No hiervas el agua ! • ¡ No salgas ! • ¡ No mezcles el ajo ! • ¡ No añadasaceite ! • ¡ No hagas el pastel !

  6. Irregular negative tú commands The following verbs are IRREGULAR (they form the acronym SIDES) Sser Iir Ddar Eestar S saber ¡ No seas ! ¡ No vayas ! ¡ No des ! ¡ No estés ! ¡ No sepas !

  7. Práctica • Don’t go ! • Don’t be angry ! • Don’t give ! • Don’t be nice ! ¡No vayas ! ¡ No estésenojado ! ¡ No des ! ¡ No seas amable !

  9. Pronouns with negative tú commands As you know, when using object pronouns (me, te, lo, la, los, las etc.) with positive commands, you must attach them to the end. With negative commands, the object pronouns go BEFOREthe command (between the “NO” and the command).

  10. Pronouns with negative tú commands Ejemplos: Don’t boil it. No lo hiervas. Don’t do it. No lo hagas. Don’t take them out. No los saques.

  11. Pronouns with negative tú commands GOOD NEWS!! - You will not need to worry about accents with negative commands because you are not changing the original stress of the word (the pronunciation)! Woohoo! • Don’t touch them (masc) • Don’t add it (fem) • Don’t tell me. • No los toques. • No la añadas • No me digas
