  2. El Imperfecto • When using the past tense in Spanish, you actually have to choose between two different tenses. • You have already learned the preterite tense. The imperfect is another (much easier) past tense in Spanish.

  3. How to conjugate a verb into the imperfect tense • Drop the infinitive endings (AR/ER/ER) • Add the endings listed below

  4. AR Verbs (hablar) Yohablaba Túhablabas Él/ella/usted hablaba Nosotroshablábamos Ellos/ellas/Ustedes hablaban

  5. ER/IR Verbs (comer/escribir) Yocomía Túcomías Él/ella/ustedcomía Nosotroscomíamos Ellos/ellas/ustedescomían

  6. Imperfect Tense Verb Endings Important Note Please note that the yo form and the él/ella/ustedforms are the same conjugations

  7. Estar (to be) Yoestaba Túestabas Él/ella/usted estaba Nosotrosestábamos Ellos/ellas/ustedesestaban

  8. Hacer (to do/to make) Yohacía Túhacías Él/ella/ustedhacía Nosotroshacíamos Ellos/ellas/ustedeshacían

  10. Irregular Imperfect Verbs There are only 3 verbs that are irregular in the imperfect. (Yay ) They are:- Ser (to be) Ir (to go) Ver (to see)

  12. Ir Yoiba Túibas Él/ella/ustediba Nosotrosíbamos Ellos/ellas/ustedesiban

  14. So, when do you use the imperfect tense? Here are some situations when you would use the imperfect tense: 1. To talk about something you used to do. (Repeated past actions) Example: Jugaba al voleibol. I used to play volleyball.

  15. So, when do you use the imperfect tense? Here are some situations when you would use the imperfect tense: • To talk about something that was happening. The “ing” in the past tense. (ongoing past action) Example: Hablábamoscuandoellallegó. We were talking when she arrived.

  16. So, when do you use the imperfect tense? Here are some situations when you would use the imperfect tense: 3. To describe something. These descriptions could be age, weather, time, physical and emotional (feelings) descriptions. Example: Cuandoyotenía 4 años... When I was 4 years old….
