My experience with SDL (a high power laser diode and optical communication company)(1983-1996) • Grow my career with company • SDL revenue grow to 27 M$ in 10 years • IPO in March 1995 • Responsible for manufacturing, Build up SDL manufacturing organization and capability • From engineer to business, after IPO, become entrepreneur • Thirteen years experience • First five years start up experience: valuable and memorable • Second five years growing experience • Last three years: fast growth with pain
Pine Photonics(2000-2005) • Founded in April 2000 with Bor-long Twu, Total investment in 2 rounds, serve as CEO • First company invested by Acorn Campus • Plan to become leading component supplier for MAN • 10 Gbps 1310 nm Transceiver, EDFA • Optical communication industry drastically fall in 2001, require adjustment, Pine survived • Switch to 2.5 Gbps SFP Transceivers • Acquired by Opnext in 2003, serve as Sr. VP, left in 2005 • Opnext IPO in February, 2007
My experience with Pine • As a CEO, responsible for company survival • Lead team to survive difficult time with sincere,trust and respect • Fundraising to get enough financial resource • Build business partnership to maximize business opportunity • Change business strategy to adjust industry environment
Silicon Valley is a good place for Chinese American Engieers • Very competitive and aggressive, • Willingness to take risk • Accept failure, understand failure gain more experience • Reward innovation and creativity • HP Way 惠普精神 • Provide engineer freedom to develop • Trust in People • Responsibility to Society
Career success factors • Positive attitude to meet challenge • Understand own strength, but don’t overconfident • Never underestimate competitor, and learn from others • Hard work, diligent to your job • Be a team player

Shin Shin Educational Foundationwww.shinshinfoundation.org • 幾位住在美國加州舊金山灣區,來自中國的長者,奉獻出一己的積蓄,在中國偏遠窮困,缺乏教育的地區,興建學校.從一九九七到二千零一年,他們已捐建了二十所學校.這些長者,都不是很富有的人,但有無比的愛心.有些已仙逝了.受他們愛心的感召,執意繼續和發揚他們的工作,更多的長者和年輕一輩的,加入了他們的行列,成立了欣欣教育基金會.過去三年來,在大家的努力下,基金會的工作受到愈來愈多的義務志工和捐助人的認同,成績快速成長.到2004年底,捐建的學校總數將達到一百六十九所.(會長2005欣欣教育基金會工作總結) 但是對須要幫助的貧苦兒童來說,這還是微不足道的數目.貧苦的孩子還等待更多的援助.請加入我們,為教育盡一份力.

APALI: APA Leadership Institute (www.svapali.org)Community based Civic Leadership program • An innovative 12-week civic leadership seminar program with emphasis on the Latino and Asian Pacific American communities and civic involvement. • Small seminar format with expert speakers. • Network with leaders and peers; increase leadership effectiveness. • Understand different communities; improve intercultural communication. • Light dinner and table discussion. • For practicing/emerging leaders, elected officials, commissioners, public employees, community volunteers, non-profit staff/board, APALI alums, college students.
Cupertino Rotary “China Project” • Partnership with Shins Shin Educational Foundation • Support Shin Shin school by providing computer room, library, education material etc. • Total grant: $ 60,000 • Start 2005, Cupertino Rotarian and Shin shin had a China trip to visit schools.
Influence Main Stream Society • We need to participate • We need do more than penetrate • We need to influence main stream society with our culture • We need to have more voice in political arena
