What is Psychomotor Education? • Learning “through movement” • Based on the theories of Aucouturier • Stimulating constructive play in the ‘Golden Age’ • Aucouturier has recognized 5 levels of play:
The 5 levels of play: • Emotional tone • Sensory-motor • Pre-symbolical • Symbolical • Abstract
1. Emotional Tone Play Soft equipment is used to enhance opportunities for young children to balance or adjust their emotional tone
2.Sensory-motor Play The child discovers the pleasure of movement using both hard and soft equipment
3. Pre-symbolical play In this stage the child is starting to explore the workings of his inner world through existential play
4. Symbolical Play More commonly known as “fantasy play”. Equipment is neutral and can be transformed into anything the child’s imagination wishes it to be.
5. Abstract Play In this stage the child is able to make logical connections between his physical world and the abstract. He can construct and represent.
