Electrical PLANS • Indicates a home’s outlets, switches and related electrical systems, such as phones, thermostats, and light fixtures
Rule 1 • Duplex convenience outlets should be a maximum of 12ft. apart
Rule 2 • Duplex outlets should be no more than 6 ft from a corner • There should be a duplex outlet in any wall over 2ft long
Rule 3 • Consider furniture layout if possible, so that duplex outlets do not become inaccessible behind large pieces
Rule 4 • Place a duplex outlet next to or behind a desk or table where a light Is needed, or near a probable reading area
Rule 5 • Place a duplex outlet near a fireplace for an adjacent table light, for a vacuum, or for fireplace maintenance
Rule 6 • Place a duplex outlet in a hallway, for vacuums
Rule 7 • Duplex outlets should be placed close together in kitchens. They are required every 4’ of counter space, and no more than 2’ from a corner
Rule 8 • Each bath, sink, or make-up table should have a duplex outlet
Rule 9 • Each enclosed bath or laundry room should have an exhaust fan • Rooms with operable windows do not require fans, although they are desirable
Rule 10 • Any outlet within 5 ft. of water, outside, or in garages should be protected by the GFI (ground-fault circuit-interrupter)
Rule 11 • A light outlet is necessary outside all entries and exterior doors
Rule 12 • A waterproof duplex outlet should be placed at a convenient exterior location, such as a patio
Rule 13 • Ceiling lights are common in children’s bedrooms for easy illumination; master bedrooms may have a switched duplex outlet for bedside lamp
Rule 14 • The kitchen may have a light over the sink, although in a very well-lit kitchen this may be an extra light
Rule 15 • Bathroom lights are generally placed above the vanity or in the center of the room • In a large bath recessed lights may be placed in the shower or above the tub
Rule 16 • Place switches in a manner that provides easiest control of light
Rule 17 • Locate lights in a large closet or in any alcove or pantry that requires light
Rule 18 • Light stairwells
Rule 19 • Place lights and outlets in garages or shops in relationship to their use
Rule 20 • Place exterior lighting properly to illuminate walks, drives, patios, decks or other high use areas
