  2. Density Lab: Introduction Anyone can stack blocks, boxes, or books, but only those with a steady hand and an understanding of density can stack liquids. What if you could stack different liquids inlayers? Think of it as a science burrito! stevespangler.com

  3. Density Lab: Materials • Graduated cylinder (wider mouth works better) • Food coloring • Cups/small beakers • Stirrers • Safety goggles • Dish soap* (Dawn blue works best) • Honey* • Light Karo syrup • Rubbing alcohol • Vegetable oil* • Water • Baby oil* • Do not add food • coloring

  4. Density Lab: Procedure • Mass the beaker and record. • Measure the same amount (20 – 50 mL) of each liquid into a beaker, one liquid at a time. • Mass the liquid in the beaker. Subtract the mass of the beaker to get the mass of the liquid. Record on chart. • Calculate the density of each liquid. Record. • SLOWLY and carefully pour the liquid with the greatest density into the cylinder. Pour into the center of the cylinder trying not to touch the sides of the cylinder. • Continue SLOWLY pouring each liquid into the cylinder in order of greatest to least density.
