  1. IMPACTS OF PMTO: COMMUNITY LEVEL EVIDENSEKONFERENCE – DENMARK 2012 Margrét Sigmarsdóttir

  2. INTRODUCTION

  3. WHY? The international literature has shown that behavior problems account for at least half of the referrals for specialist services. That was also the experience in the community of Hafnarfjörður

  4. Adapted in Iceland from Gerald Patterson by Margrét Sigmarsdóttir 2003

  5. TREATMENT PARENT GROUPS PBS/SMT SKÓLAFÆRNI TRAINING PROFESSIONALS

  6. FORMER STUDIES A systematic change dealing with behavior problems in an experimental community A decrease in official records on substantiated child maltreatment, child out-of-home placements and child maltreatment injuries (Prinz, Sanders, Shapiro, Whitaker & Lutzker, 2009; Randall, Swenson, & Henggeler, 1999)

  7. GOAL WITH THE STUDY To examine influences of the PMTO implementation at community level by counting numbers of referrals to special services in Hafnarfjordur and two comparison communities

  8. METHOOD

  9. PARTICIPANTS Three communities is Iceland; Hafnarfjordur, and two control communities not implementing the method CONTROL COMMUNITY 1 CONTROL COMMUNITY 2 HAFNARFJÖRÐUR

  10. MEASURES Data for the number of elementary school children referred for specialist services were gathered for the school years 1996/1997 through 2006/2007

  11. RESULTS

  12. 1996-2000 - Before implementation 2000-2007 - After implementation 0,12 0,10 0,08 0,06 The average number of referrals as a ratio of all students (6-16) in the community 0,04 0,02 0,00 CONTROL COMMUNITY 1 CONTROL COMMUNITY 2 HAFNARFJÖRÐUR Sigmarsdóttir & Björnsdóttir, 2012

  13. Sigmarsdóttir & Björnsdóttir, 2012

  14. DISCUSSION

  15. Results are in line with former studies and could be explained by increased knowledge of PMTO amongst parents and professionals to work independently with the issues of child rearing and therefore have a reduced need to seek traditional special services

  16. FUTURE Following a systematic infusion of PMTO at community level, we could expect changes in dealing with behavior problems and a shift in focus from only diagnosing these problems to systematic prevention and treatment
