Gaining a relationship • If you would like to gain business with a Japanese business person it is prevalent that you understand their business culture • If you understand Japanese business culture than it will show you appreciate and respect their culture • Respect is very important to Japanese people
Comparison of the Business World Japanese Business Culture American Business Culture Conformity creates unity, do not wear anything that stands out Black suit with tie from October-April Grey suit from May-September If you are of higher management you should always sit by the hosts Japanese do not mind sitting in silence Gracious and Courteous (Its okay to over do it) Japanese women are fashion conscious Women do not wear jewlery Black suits and a black tie is not offensive Americans like to talk Americans are polite, but have pride
Colors in Japan -Black =death, destruction, doom, fear and sorrow-White = purity and cleanliness and is a blessed color-Red = power-Blue = purity and cleanliness -Green = youth and vitality • It is important to understand how Japanese people perceive colors. • For example, if you are attending a business meeting with a Japanese client then it is probably best not to wear all black as it is a representation of death. • Specifically you do not wear black suit, white shirt, and black tie as American Business Culture • Since red is a strong color in Japan and represents power you may want to consider coordinating this in your outfit
Japanese Business Etiquette • Business cards are important to be given out • Be sure to have one side with Japanese writing • Always present business card with both hands and slightly bow as you do • Always give to the highest person first • Never write on Japanese business cards • Treat them with respect
What NOT to Do! • Do not blow your nose in public • Do not grab your host's hand when first meeting and try to shake hands. A lot of Japanese seldom shake hands and can be so uncomfortable doing so as to avoid meeting again • Never pat a Japanese man on the back or shoulder • Never make derogatory remarks about your own employees or competitors • Do not ask people about their private life – Keep it to business
