  2. Who was Madeleine Sophie Barat? • Sophie Barat was the daughter of Jacques Barat, a cooper who worked in the vineyards. • Mother Barat grew up in the time of the French Revolution. Because of this, education, especially for girls, was hard to come by. Sophie was one of the few girls to be educated. • She founded the Society of the Sacred Heart in 1801, devoted to the Sacred Heart and dedicated to teaching girls. Her missionaries traveled all around the world to help in the field of education. • Mother Barat died in Paris. She was canonized on May 24, 1925 by Pope Pius XI, and is the Patron Saint of schoolgirls.

What is Madeleine Sophie’s Story? • She was the foundress of the Society of Jesus. • At age 15, Mother Barat was able to go with her brother to Paris to help with apostolic work there. • Mother Barat’s earliest mission was the teaching of girls. • While carrying out this mission, she met Father Joseph Varin, who became a mentor, spiritual advisor, and role model to Madeleine. • She started the Society of Jesus, and worked in this field for the rest of her life. • Sophie was aided by Philippine Duchesne, and sent Philippine to America to help children there. • Saint Barat opened more then 80 schools for girls and also helped with the poor. • She died in Paris in 1865 and was canonized in 1925.

  5. How Does Saint Barat Fit into her Time period? • Question: How did she challenge the culture/Church of the time? • Answer: St. Madeline Sophie Barat was a courageous, daring, and bold leader. She challenged the culture of the time by educating girls and boys even when education was scarce and not popular. She possessed many innovative ideas for her time. • Question: What is the context that she lived in? • Answer: Madeleine Sophie lived in the time of the French Revolution. During this time, education for girls was sparse. France was poverty-stricken and had a harsh class system until the time of this revolution. There were many uprisings and Madeleine’s hometown may not have been safe. Education was not as usual as it was today, and there was little cleanliness.

  6. Sophie and Her Time Period Question: How does her story fit into the larger story of the time? Answer: Madeleine’s story plays a great role in her time period. She affected many people, especially girls, giving them educations. This changed the lives of many girls. Not only did she help those of her time period, but also made an investment for the future by building schools. This ensured that children all across the world would receive a great education. Sophie also inspired many women to achieve their goals and reach for the stars. She is still remembered for all of the fabulous work that she did.

  7. How Does Sister Barat Affect Our Lives? • Question: What lessons can we take from learning more about her life? • Answer: We can all learn many lessons from learning about Mother Barat’s life. Madeline Sophie gave all girls an equal chance when she founded the Schools of the Sacred Heart, whether they were rich, poor, or children from different countries. She wanted to give all girls the experience she had when she was younger; to be educated, polite, and elequent. We can learn from the choices and actions St. Madeline Sophie Barat made that everyone deserves a fair chance to follow their dreams and desires. We can also learn that we should bestow to others the thrills and enjoyments we experienced and enjoyed. Everybody should know about the life of St. Madeline Sophie Barat. • Question: How does knowing about her life help us to understand Church history? • Answer: Knowing about St. Madeline Sophie Barat’s life helps us understand Church history in several ways. We can understand how difficult life was when Sophie was a child, and how important it was to have an education in a Christian life. We can understand how praised and renowned it was to found a school for all girls, because we all remember her today.
