  2. Introduction • Madeleine Sophie Barat was the founder of the Sacred Heart Schools. In this slide show, we will go over her life and tell you why she has become one of the most beloved saints by the Sacred Heart community.

  3. Early Life -Madeleine Sophie was born in Joigny, France to Jacques and Madeleine Barat. Her family was in the winemaking business • Her brother Louis, was her Godfather and later became her teacher, because at the time woman received little to none education. -He taught her science, history and language, all leading to her love of education. -Unlike most women of the time, it is believed that she spoke Greek and Latin

  4. French Revolution • Madeleine Sophie Barat lived in France he entire life. A major event that happened during her life was the French revolution, which included a period of repression known as the reign of terror. All people who’s loyalty to the French Republic was in doubt was killed. The Church tried to take a neutral stance, but could not help getting swept into the war and many Catholics supported the revolution.

  5. Effects of the Revolution • The struggling French monarchy issued a fatal blow to the Catholic Church in France: The Civil Constitution. It allowed the French government to regulate church affairs. They also made all of the bishops and priests accept an oath that allowed the government to regulate church affairs. Few took the oath, and the Catholic Church looked to the Pope for help. He condemned the constitution and church and state once again were on a collision course

  6. Reign of Terror • Between 1793 and 1794, the revolution entered the Reign of Terror. Thousands of Priests and religious people fled or were faced to renounce their priesthood or be excavated. It was unsafe for Madeleine Sophie to become a nun during these terrible times.

  7. The Start of her Religious life • As soon as the reign of terror was over, she moved to Paris and continued her studies in Theology. Then, she and three others made their vows. Madeleine Sophie, like her brother, was one of the new Catholics who emphasized God’s love for us and made a focus on education of all God’s children. At the time, Christians did not feel worthy enough to go to school, but she and many others made sure all were welcome in God’s faith through education

  8. Religious of the Sacred Heart • At the time, woman were not accepted into the Jesuit order so she met with Father Joseph Varin to start working on revitalizing Christian faith in France. Although the name changed many times, from Dilette di Gesu, to the Ladies of the faith, to the Daughters of Jesus, and finally to the Society of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, their ideas stayed the same

  9. Opening Schools • She opened her first school in Amiens, and then in 1804, she traveled to Grenoble, and met with St. Rose Philippine. They became friends and developed the Society of the Sacred Heart in the United States. In 1806, she was elected Mother Superior. During this time she opened many schools for girls with the idea of teaching girls God’s love.

  10. Death • Leading the society for 65 years, she led the society from having 3 members to nearly 3,000 members on four continents. She died on May 25, 1865 and was canonized in 1925 by Pope Pius XI. Her feast day is the 25th of May.
