  2. Overview of Existing TVPS Configuration • Most of the NSTX vacuum pumping system and gauging systems will be reconfigured to accommodate 2nd neutral beam, including: • Pumpduct • TMPs • RGA system • Capacitance manometers • Ion gauge assemblies • Pumpduct • 24” diameter and 18’ in length • Bellows and ceramic break RGA System CMs TMP TMP Roughing Port Ceramic Break Bellows IGs

  3. Existing TVPS Configuration • TMPs • ~ 19’ from center of NSTX • magnetic field < 50 gauss without any shielding • two 1500 l/s pumps • TVPS D2 pumping speed ~1650 l/s • RGA System • located at the end of the pumpduct • differentially pumped system • consists of separate TMP vacuum system and orifice valve • capable of sampling VV conditions at relatively high pressures such as GDC • Capacitance manometers • located at the end of the pumpduct • 3 gauges (1, 10 and 1000 Torr) • 1 and 10 Torr gauges used for GDC and calibrations • Ion Gauge Assemblies • two ion gauge assembles • located on pumpduct near the vacuum vessel • each ion gauge housed in magnetic shielding TVPS Configuration 19 ft (to center of NSTX) RGA and CMs Ion Gauges TF Coil 1500 l/s TMPs 3

  4. TVPS Upgrade Configuration • Pumpduct assembly: • two assemblies located underneath the 2nd NB transition duct • 14” od and 72” in length • ceramic break and bellows • legacy assemblies • 12.5” id x 13” long • 12” gate valve • two adapter spool pieces above and below gate valve • TMPs • gauging • roughing port 4

  5. TMPs and Magnetic Shielding • TMPs • located 11.5’ from center of NSTX • placed near test cell floor • require magnetic shielding • 2650 l/s D2pumping speed each • calculated D2pumping speed of vacuum pumping system is ~ 3050 l/s • Magnetic shields • ½” thick low carbon steel cylinders • 17 ½” od extending 6” above and below TMP • reduces the magnetic field to less 50 gauss 5

  6. TMP and RGA Support Stands • Two support stand assemblies for various loads: • approx. 600 lbs weight • approx. 1800 lbs vacuum load • less than 50 lbs from magnetic forces • approx. 5700 ft-lbs torque for worst case TMP failure • additionally the 2nd stand supports the RGA assembly • Support stand: • approx. 34” high with 3” aluminum legs bolted to ½” SS plate and floor • cross braces with G-10 brackets for electrical isolation 6

  7. RGA and Gauging Overview • Ion gauge assembly on each pumping duct • RGA and capacitance manometer assemblies on separate ducts • All assemblies located between the duct and the neutral beam box 7

  8. CM and Ion Gauge Assemblies • CM assembly : • 1, 10 and 1000 Torr gauges • CB/bellows assembly • pumpout and isolation valve • ¼” thick SS support plate welded to spool piece above HVV • Ion gauge assemblies : • two miniature ion gauges • CB/bellows assembly • pumpout and isolation valve • low carbon steel shield cylinder • SS brackets and support plate welded to duct • shields u-bolted to support plate 8

  9. RGA System • Same differentially pumped configuration as existing system on NSTX • RGA assembly : • TMP and forepump • CB and bellows • interface , orifice and TMP isolation valves • ion gauge and CMs • two RGAs for trend monitoring and after shot outgassing • Small TMP will also shielded from magnetic fields • Same capabilities for measurements across a wide range of pressures 9

  10. Slide title Summary • TMPs near test cell floor and shielded with ½” carbon steel cylinder • Magnetic field reduced to less than 50 gauss • RGA system configuration similar to existing system • Increased D2 pumping speed ~1650 =>~3050 l/s • Design and modeling are complete • 5 of 8 drawings completed, including most required for fabrication of parts (~90%) • No open items from previous reviews • No outstanding risks • No significant change in cost 10 10 10 NSTX NSTX NB Upgrade Peer Review April 19, 2011
