  1. NSTX Supported by Fault Analysis NSTX Centerstack Upgrade Project Meeting P. Titus Sept 14 2011

  2. Global Model Faulted Load Load Files This example is for Nominal Load Multiplier of 1.0 and a Faulted Coil Multiplier of 1.5 The Faulted Coil is Selected Out, and Coil Real Constants are Scaled Faulted Group of 3 Turns

  3. 3 Turn Charging Fault Current Multipliers Normal = 1.0 Faulted = -1.0

  4. Current Multipliers Normal = 1.0 Faulted = -1.0

  5. 3 Turn Charging Fault Differenced with the Nominal EQ 79 Load File Current Multipliers Normal = 1.0 Faulted = -1.0

  6. Faulted Group of 3 Turns <233 Mpa Allowable Current Multipliers Normal = 1.0 Faulted = -1.0

  7. 3 Turn Inversion Fault Current Multipliers Normal = .62 Faulted = 1.356 175kA/129kA = 1.356 !Inversion 3 Turns Shorted rscale 53,1,50,1.36 rscale 55,1,52,1.36 rscale 54,1,51,1.36 rscale 50,1,50,.62 rscale 52,1,52,.62 rscale 51,1,51,.62 80kA/129kA = .62

  8. Faulted Group of 3 Turns Current Multipliers Normal = .62 Faulted = 1.356

  9. 3 Turn Inversion Fault <233 Mpa Allowable Current Multipliers Normal = .62 Faulted = 1.356

  10. Current Multipliers Normal = .62 Faulted = 1.356

  11. Current Multipliers Normal = .62 Faulted = 1.356 This plot is for load step 1 subtracted from load step 3 and shows the increase in stress for the 3Turn inversion fault for the .62 and 1.356 load multipliers. 3 Turn Inversion Fault Differenced with the Nominal EQ 79 Load File

  12. 3 Turn Inversion Fault 225kA/129kA = 1.766 !Inversion 3 Turns Shorted rscale 53,1,50,1.766 rscale 55,1,52,1.766 rscale 54,1,51,1.766 rscale 50,1,50,.01 rscale 52,1,52,.01 rscale 51,1,51,.01

  13. Faulted Group of 3 Turns Current Multipliers Normal = .01 Faulted = 1.774

  14. Faulted Group of 3 Turns <233 Mpa Allowable Current Multipliers Normal = .01 Faulted = 1.774

  15. 3 Turn Inversion Fault Inner TF Legs Equatorial Plane Cut Current Multipliers Normal = .01 Faulted = 1.774

  16. Conclusions Only 3 turns shorted has been analyzed. 3 Turns are assumed in the same coil 1 turn and 18 turn shorts have not been analyzed Charging fault max load case is assumed the be the end of fault with max TF and max negative shorted coil currents Inversion fault has been treated with two time points All TF stresses are within normal allowables. So Far Faults are survivable
