Michigan firsts and trivia Although Michigan’s is often called the Wolverine State there are no longer any Wolverines in Michigan. In 1817 the University of Michigan was the first university established by any of the states. The Sleeping Bear Sand Dunes rise 460 ft. (140.208m) above Lake Michigan. Sault Ste. Marie was founded by father Jaques Marquette in 1668 and it is the third oldest settlement remaining in the US.
