  2. Early Identification Symptoms • Increase rubbing of the eyes • Clumsiness and trouble moving around • Moving materials close to the eyes • Adjusting head in an awkward position to see materials • Swollen red eyelids • Crossed eyes

  3. Types of Visual Disabilities There are several different types of vision impairments that young children may have… • Amblyopia • Glaucoma • Nearsightedness • Farsightedness • Color Deficiency

  4. Amblyopia • Amblyopia is often called lazy eye. This disorder is the result of a muscle substance caused by disuse of an eye. • It is one of several visual conditions that can be corrected If found during early childhood. • If treatment of amblyopia is not done by age 6 or 7, the child’s vision may always be poor.

  5. Glaucoma • Glaucoma is a condition caused by failure of the eye fluid to circulate in the proper way. • This results in increased pressure on the eye. Over time this pressure can destroy the optic nerve. • This problem can be treated with medicated eye drops if diagnosed early.

  6. Nearsightedness • Some children may be unable to see things that are far away. The medical term for this visual disorder is myopia. It results when the eye focuses in front of the retina.

  7. Farsightedness • Children who have difficult time seeing objects that are close to them are farsighted. • The medical term for this visual disorder is hyperopia. • It caused by having the visual image focus behind the retina.

  8. Color Deficiency • Color deficiency, or color blindness, as it is sometimes called, is the inability to see a color. This problem is hereditary. • It mostly affects males and is caused by a recessive gene. You should be able to quickly identify children with color deficiencies. • People with this can only identify one or more primary colors.

  9. Uncorrectable Conditions • There are several disorders that cannot be corrected by glasses, surgery, or other means of treatment. • Any damage to the optic nerve by disease or trauma is an example. After damage signals do not get to the brain to provide the child with sight.
