What is the Purpose of This Form? • Used to Determine Work Eligibility, Tax Status and benefits • Used for Employment and Tax Withholding Purposes. • Taxes in the U.S. are Based Upon • Visa Type • Immigration Status • Length of Time Present in the U.S. • Source of your income/wages • While Working in the U.S., You Have to Pay Taxes • (There is an Exception to this Rule) • NIU is Obligated to Withhold Taxes

  4. Who Should Fill out the form? • All New Non-resident Faculty, Student and Staff. • Update the Form Every Year • Do Not Fill Out Tax Forms W-4 or 8233 • A Properly Completed FNIF is Used to Generate the Correct Tax Documents You Will Sign

  5. Types of taxes • Federal Taxes: Federal Government Taxes • State Taxes: Illinois • FICA Taxes: Oasdi and Medicare • Students are Normally Exempted from FICA taxes

Exemption from FICA and Tax Treaty • Students Exempted from FICA taxes • Some Countries with Income Tax Treaty Exempted from Paying US Taxes • Your Tax Status is Based on Visa Type and Immigration History • Read FNIF Instructions - Carefully • Fill out the Form Completely • Do Not Leave any Blanks • Questions – Call or E-mail • Your Name Should match in All of Your Documents • Do Not Use Nick Names

  9. PAYDAY • Payday is on the 15th and the 30th (or 31st) of the month. • If payday falls on a weekend, then payday is on Friday before the weekend. • If you don’t have direct deposit, you’ll need to pick up your check at HR (Swen Parson 110 between 8:00 and 4:30 on payday
