  5. Dominican Republic • Capital is Santo Domingo • Tropical Climate • Most visited island in the Caribbean • War with Haiti • Independence in 1844 • 1930-1961 dictatorship of Rafael Trujillo until assassination • Country went through more overthrown governments striving for democracy

  6. Puerto Rico • Capital is San Juan • Territory of United States • Name means, “rich port” • Originally San Juan Batista, and changed to Puerto Rico after Spanish-American War • Originally inhabited by Taino

  7. Jamaica • Capital is Kingston • Originally inhabited by Arawak and Taino • Major earthquake hit in 1907 • Independence from United Kingdom in 1962 • African influences • Primary language is English, with various dialects
