January 18, 1777 – Vermont becameanindependantstate. 1791 – Vermont joinedtheFederalUnion.

Probably not the most interesting state? • Vermont's capital city, Montpelier, is the smallest state capital in the U.S. , with a population of less than 9,000 people. • Montpelier, Vermont is the only U.S. capital without a McDonald’s restaurant. • Forests cover more than three-fourths of the state. • Itspopulation, onlyabout 620,000 people, isranked 49th amongstates. • Until 1996, Vermont was the only state without a Wal-Mart.
