    2. Founders In 1535 a French explorer Jacques Cartier was the 1st European to see what now is Vermont. In 1690 Samuel de Champlain was the 1st European to explore Vermont.

    3. Lake Champlain In 1609, Samuel de Champlain reached a lake that was later called by him “Lake Champlain”.

    4. In 1700’s In 1731the French built a fort called Fort Dummer at Dummerston and began settlements. Before that the Green mountain boys planed o keep new Hampshire protected.

    5. Vermont’s Establishments In 1791,Vermont coined it’s own money,established viable governmental structure,and considered the possibility uniting with Canada. Vermont applied for statehood and was admitted to the union.

    6. 1918 Vermontians fought representing the United States during World War 2.

    7. 1962 Hahn Bratton was the first Democratic governor in over 100 years.

    10. Key points Vermont’s name was dubbed by the Green Mountains. Samuel de Champlain is the earliest European to have explored Vermont. In June 8, 1812 a boundary line between New York and Vermont was established because they both claimed the whole region without realizing each other jurisdiction. After the America revolution many English colonist had immigrated to VT land. Women start voting in town elections in 1918.

Timeline 1760-Crown Point Military Road, from Springfield, VT to Chimney Point VT, completed east-west across Vermont. 1775-Ethan Allen captures Fort Ticonderoga. 1777-Vermont declares itself a republic in Windsor-adopts 1st constitution with universal male suffrage,public schools, abolishing slave battles of Hubbardton & Bennington. 1791-Vermont becomes 14th state; University of Vermont chartered; Thomas Jefferson and James Madison visit Vermont; 85,341 people in Vermont.

Timeline 1805-Montpelier chosen as capital; Joseph Smith, founder of the Morm Church, born in Royalton. 1823-Alexander Twilight first African American to earn college degree in the US at Middlebury. 1864-St. Albans Raid, northern most Civil War1865-State Agricultural college set up at the University of Vermont as a land Grant college 1881-Chester A. Aurther of Fairfield becomes U.S. president.

    14. Timeline 1891-Bennington Battle Monument completed in Old Bennington. 1918-Women vote in town election. 1962-First democratic governor in 100 years elected. 1964-Victory,Granby, & Jamaica last towns in VT to receive electricity.
