  2. Review Essays: ~A piece of writing focused on one topic, like a paragraph. ~Made up of multiple paragraphs. ~Also divided into Introduction, Body, and Conclusion.

  3. Review Thesis Statement: ~focus of entire essay ~all paragraphs and sentences must develop Thesis Statement ~appears in Intro Paragraph ~usually the last sentence of the Intro

  4. Review An Introduction is a beginning paragraph which states the purpose and goals. The introduction is usually interesting and causes the reader to want to read on. Contains the Thesis Statement.

  5. Essays The Body develops the Thesis Statement and should be around 3 paragraphs long. Contains descriptions, examples, details, arguments, commentary on the Thesis Statement.

  6. Essays The role of each body paragraph is to explain one main idea about your essay's thesis statement. Every sentence in a well-constructed body paragraph is tied directly to the aim indicated by the paragraph's topic sentence.

  7. Body Paragraphs STRUCTURE OF A BODY PARAGRAPH: 1. Topic Sentence: Start with a general statement that indicates the focus and idea of the paragraph. Look to Thesis.

  8. Body Paragraphs STRUCTURE OF A BODY PARAGRAPH: 2. Support: Build points in logical progression (one thing leads to the next). Support each point with proof using details, examples, quotes, facts, anecdotes, etc.

  9. Body Paragraphs STRUCTURE OF A BODY PARAGRAPH: 3. Concluding Sentence: End the paragraph with a statement that sums up the paragraph. Answer the question “What is the point of this paragraph?”

  10. Body Paragraphs • Unity: There must be a consistent development of one main idea in each paragraph. ~Each sentence must clearly connect to the topic sentence. ~Sentences that stray from the topic confuse the reader and the point is lost.

  11. Body Paragraphs • Completeness: Detailed information must be provided to clearly put forth ideas. ~Each point must be supported with specifics to make a paragraph complete.

  12. Body Paragraphs • Order: Order must be logical, both with the order of the sentences in the paragraph and the order of the paragraphs in the paper.

  13. Body Paragraphs ~Order can be chronological (first this, then this, then this, etc.) or emphatic (from least important to most important).

  14. Body Paragraphs • Coherence: need a smooth flow between sentences. ~Lack of coherence occurs when there is too much white space in the writing (omitted thoughts) or there is a lack of transitional words.

  17. Assignment: Your topic is Christianity In My Daily Life. You have written your Thesis and your Introduction. Now write your Body Paragraphs and add then to the Introduction!
