  1. English 9 and Bible Miss McCoy Lesson 14: Paragraph Writing, Poetry

  2. Writing Review Sentences are made of words. Words are divided into types called Parts of Speech. All sentences must have at least a Noun and a Verb and complete a thought.

  3. Writing Review Paragraphs are sentences that focus on one main idea. Paragraphs begin with a Topic Sentence. The other sentences must develop that Topic Sentence. All paragraphs must end with a Concluding Sentence.

  4. Concluding Sentences Paragraphs have a sentence at the end which summarizes the information presented.  This is the Concluding Sentence.  You can think of a Concluding Sentence as a sort of Topic Sentence in reverse.

  6. My hometown is famous for several amazing features.  First, it is noted for the Wheaton River, which is very beautiful. Also, on the other side of the town is Wheaton Hill, which is very steep. The third feature is the Big Old Tree. This tree stands two hundred feet tall and is probably about six hundred years old. These three landmarks are truly amazing and make my hometown a famous place.

  11. Concluding Sentences A Concluding Sentence never adds NEW information. The ending sentence in a paragraph or essay should summarize what has already been said.

  12. Concluding Sentences The ending sentence should add ZING to the paragraph or essay. The place to restate and remind the reader about what the paragraph or composition was about.

  13. Concluding Sentences Things to think about: ~The topic is restated to remind the reader what the paragraph was about.~Think about what idea or feeling you want to leave your reader with.

  14. Concluding Sentences You want to avoid: Introducing a new topic. Phrases such as:  “as I have said”, “as I proved”, “as you can see”.

After I tried out for band,I learned that there were things I had to do for a good performance.The first reason I like the band is it has given me the chance to play drums.Practicing on my drums allows me to be a better performer. Becoming a better player makes it easier for me to be in front of people on stage. What I have learned by being in band has helped me to grow and be a better musician.

  20. What is Poetry? Poetry is language with musical elements. Some say poetry must contain such literary elements as metaphor and simile.

  21. What is Poetry? Others stress rhythm and rhyme as the most essential parts of poetry. As with art itself, the definition of poetry is under constant debate.

  22. What is Poetry? Poetry was born of a basic human desire to communicate not just the meaning of words, but also the sense or feel of them. Writers use poetry to evoke a mood in the reader or listener.

  23. What is Poetry? Simple definition: A poem is a special kind of writing that is usually easy to recognize because of its structure- short lines of text.

  24. What is Poetry? Other identifying characteristics: ~Rhythm: structured repetition of sounds. Roses are red, Violets are blue; Sugar is sweet And so are you. (Each line has 4 beats)

  25. What is Poetry? Other identifying characteristics: ~Rhyme: repeating specific sounds through the piece. I went to the zoo, Tommy went too. I felt rather blue, ‘Cuz I didn’t see you.

  27. What is Poetry? Other identifying characteristics: ~Stanzas: groups of lines that break up a poem, like a paragraph breaks up a story.   28. What is Poetry? Forms: One common type of poetry is rhyming couplets, in which each successive pair of lines are approximately the same length and rhyme with one another.

  29. What is Poetry? Forms: In free-form poetry, rhyme and meter are loose, allowing for complex rhythms and greater contextual freedom.

  30. What is Poetry? Forms: Haiku, a short form of poetry, strives to evoke a moment or mood in just three short lines.

  31. What is Poetry? Features: One of the elements of poetry is metaphor, a literary technique used to compare one thing to another.

  32. What is Poetry? Features: Imagery is another basic literary element of poetry, and is often used to paint a picture in the mind of the reader or listener.

  33. What is Poetry? Features: To evoke a sense of authenticity some poets use vernacular language, or the current language of pop culture, or slang.
