  1. New Observational Constraints on the Mass-Loss History of SN 1987A Ben E. K. Sugerman Columbia University Arlin Crotts, Steve Lawrence, Bill Kunkle, Steve Heathcote

  2. Project Goal • Make the most complete 3-D map of the surround-ing CSM • Build an observational base to allow more thorough models of the mass-loss history • a.k.a. Stellar Archeology or Paleontology NOR Star 2 SN 1987A ER Star 3 SOR

  3. Conclusions

  4. Ground-based field of view • Narrow-band continuum imaging • Continuous coverage from 1988 - present

  5. PSF-matched difference imaging

  6. Scattered Light Echoes • Light echoes give exact 3-D positions • Only assumption/uncertainty is distance to source • Sugerman 2003 (astro-ph/0307254; Oct ‘03 AJ)

  7. Echo structures up to r=30 ly • Inner Hourglass • Inner CSM • Napoleon’s Hat • RSG/MS Contact Discontinuity

  8. Contact Discontinuity

  9. Napoleon’s Hat

  10. Hourglass & BSG CSM

  11. Filling in the gaps… • Independently determine the orientation of each structure • Assume each structure is cylindrically symmetric • Revolve average profile about axis, reflect about equator

  12. RSG outflows

  13. BSG Outflows

  14. The Inner Hourglass Only

  15. A cross-sectional profile 4 ly 4 ly 21 ly 11 ly 2 ly 2-4 ly

  16. Properties • Total mass of 1.7 Mo • RSG mass loss of 5x10-6 Mo yr-1 • Structures are offset from SN • Structures have elliptical cross-section

  17. A formation model? • Martin & Arnett 1995 • Fast BSG wind impacting previously-ejected slow RSG wind

  18. Solution: Two Blue Loops • 2 Blue Loops: 1st is 10x longer than 2nd • Self-Similar WBB + shock focusing • Equator: WCD??

  19. Ask me about… • Dust gets larger with r • Dust Silicate:Carbon decreases with r • OR positions

  20. OR positions determined as intersection of 2-D positions with CS hourglass • NOR is 1.3 ly away, SOR is 1.1 ly away
