This lesson I will…. • Outline • Chart the events of the Berlin Blockade/Aifliftby maps • Explain how the Berlin Blockade increased tensions • Examine Britain's role in the crisis
Germany • The USSR had already disagreed with Britain and the USA at Potsdam (July 1945) about what should be done with Germany • USSR wanted to punish Germany and wanted to see it broken and divided • USA and Britain wanted to rebuild Germany (with their supervision) • Agreement: Germany was split into 4 zones
Bizonia • 1948 Britain could no longer afford to maintain its zone in Germany • Jan 1948 Bevin reaches agreement to merge its zone with the USA- (Bizonia) France merged its zone soon after (Trizonia) • Belief that united Germany would help its economy recover • Soviet Union felt threatened –felt it was allied attempt at unification
What was the situation in Germany by 1948? • On 18 June as a step towards the economic reconstruction of Germany, a new currency, the Deutschmark, was introduced in the Western Zones • Within four days, the USSR had introduced their own currency.
The Berlin Blockade Stalin's next move was to block all land access (rail and road access) to Berlin, therefore, preventing any supplies getting through to Berlin.
What to do? • There were 2 million people living in Berlin and soon their food and medical supplies would run out. • They know that this is a potentially dangerous situation for sparking another war- do they really want that?
What would you do? Possible course of action
Four Choices • Negotiate with the USSR and try to make a deal • Break through the blockade using land troops • Pull out of Berlin altogether • Airlift supplies into Berlin
Airlift supplies • USA favoured sending tanks to lift the blockade • Britain suggested an airlift • USA, and royal air force airlifted 3000 tons of food daily into Berlin. • This was a humiliating defeat for the Soviet Union • May 1949- Blockade of Berlin was lifted • Success for USA and Britain • Does Britain’s role in the Berlin airlift show that Britain was a world power? Discuss.
End to the Blockade • The success of the Allied airlift forced the Soviets to lift the blockade in May 1949
