  1. Come in… Sharpen pencils… Clear desk except for the sheets I placed on it. Write your name and date on each sheet. Now, sit patiently!

  2. A tiger was walking through the jungle one day and saw two men relaxing under a tree. One was reading a newspaper, and the other was working feverishly on a manual typewriter. The tiger leapt on the man with the newspaper, and ate him up. The tiger did not bother the other man at all. That's because any predator knows that readers digest but writers cramp. Why is it important to learn to write well?

  3. Complex Sentence Smack Down Can you put the sentence in the correct order? You must think about capitalization and punctuation to do a correct job. Watch as a few of us model the game… Work with your partner to determine which order the sentence should be put in. One color strip contains dependent clauses, and the other color strip has independent clauses.

  4. Remember the pattern! OPENER, SENTENCE SENTENCE CLOSER When you think you have it correct, check the key.

  5. Show what you know in a Journal Write! Listen really well to the story prompt, so you will be able to imitate it in your writing.

  6. Finish your sentence and turn your chart paper over. Follow instructions to fill it out—it will become your guide to grading your writing. STOP Writing!

  7. Let’s discuss what we learned about writing by analyzing beautiful mentor sentences…
