Data Center Update November 5, 2010
Background • Studies by Staggs and Fisher Consulting Engineers and Emerson Network Power confirm serious power and cooling limitations in the Miller IT Data Center • Of 240kW available on the building transformer, approximately 114kW is available for additional IT systems • Need short, medium, and long-term options • $308,000 provided to address issues • $850,000 NSF facilities upgrade and network grant pending
Consultant recommendations • Short-term MITC Improvements • Address Physical Issues (blanking panels, organize cables, seal perimeter of room) • Organize and relocate racks • Add cold aisle containment • Reset temperature and humidity settings • Add Cooling Capacity • In-row cooling for HPC and email systems
MITC Data Center Plans • Create New Rack Standard • Integrated power monitoring • Top of rack network switching • In-row cooling • Overhead cable access • Implement high density area for new systems • Add HPC Phase II • Consolidate enterprise systems • Consolidate LAN systems
Medium-Term Options • Complete virtualization of eligible servers • Dramatically reduce number of servers • Reduce power consumption • Utilize MedCenter3 data center • MOU still under negotiation • UofL occupying 1500 square feet • Nucleus has agreed to let us start moving in eqmt • Issuing RFP for Co-location Services • Option to lease rack space for a few years
New Data Center • Need to find a long-term option • Looking for up to 5000 square feet of data center space • Evaluating locations such as HSC, ShelbyHurst, UofL Research Park, and others • Meeting with JRA Architects and Staggs and Fisher Engineers • Investigating options for pre-fab data center
