  2. Objectives: • Describe methods for assessing learner needs. • Discuss the elements of developing a simulation plan for orientation. • Discuss how to incorporate simulation into dept-based orientation. • Evaluate outcomes of an Orientation Simulation Strategy.

Establishing the Need to Change! • Impact Evaluation • critical thinking issues • early recognition issues • Course Evaluations • Too much information... • Some speakers & topics are boring.... • Prefer hands-on.... • Simulation Survey Results • 98% of participants indicated strong interest in attending programs that incorporated simulation. • 98% of participants indicated that the using clinical simulation in education programs would enhance their learning experience and improve critical thinking.

Simulation Survey: • I would be interested in attending programs to enhance my clinical knowledge, critical thinking and clinical skills using clinical simulation. • Using simulation mannequins will enhance my learning experience and help me to improve both critical thinking and clinical skills. • Participating in continuing education activities that use clinical simulation will assist me to provide safe, high quality patient care – especially when learning new skills/procedures and protocols. • The simulation manikins provided a more realistic clinical training experience than traditional mannequins. • The simulation manikins would be easy to use and transport for in-service education and dept-based competency validation. • I would use a hospital-based simulation lab to teach skills and scenarios to healthcare providers and /or students that I am orienting and/or precepting. • How often would you utilize a hospital simulation lab for your own development or to assist with other healthcare provider’s development? Simulation Strategy: Define Your Goals • Increase Learning Retention • Adoption of learned skills and integration of new concepts into clinical practice. • Improve Critical Thinking Skills • Increase early identification of a DUC (Determining Underlying Conditions). • Reduce failures to rescue. • Increase Learner Satisfaction • Improved program evaluations.

  8. Developing & Implementing the Simulation Plan Where? • Physical space • Dedication simulation room • Patient room • Storage • Manikins & Equipment • Low, Mid & High Fidelity manikins • Video, headwalls, sink, monitors, crash carts, beds, medical supplies

  9. Developing & Implementing the Simulation Plan Who?: • Identify your simulation coordinator & champion! • Identify your technical support expert • Identify your facilitators • Provide education.... and more education ... and then some more education!

  10. Developing & Implementing the Simulation Plan How?: • Purchased scenarios versus developing your own scenarios. • Consider when you will use simulation and what objectives you want the participant to accomplish. • Consider your human and financial resources.

Evaluating the Simulation Plan Lessons Learned: • Start small, think big! • Identify & secure necessary resources – equipment, technical support, facilitator... • Provide the necessary training....and then more training! • Seek opportunities to partner. • Create a wish list. • Educate your Leaders, your Board & your Foundation!. • Measure & share your results.
