National Flu Virus Update • During the week ending April 23, 105 (46.9%) of the 224 influenza-positive tests reported to CDC by public health laboratories were influenza A viruses and 119 (53.1%) were influenza B viruses • CDC has characterized 1,777 specimens collected in the U.S. since October 1, 2015 • 744 influenza A (H1N1)- all were antigenically characterized as similar to A/California/7/2009, the influenza A (H1N1) component of the 2015-2016 Northern Hemisphere vaccine • 445 influenza A (H3N2)- all were antigenically characterized to be similar to cell-propagated A/Switzerland/9715293/2013, the influenza A (H3N2) component of the 2015-2016 Northern Hemisphere vaccine • 588 influenza B viruses- 99.0% were antigenically characterized as similar to the 2015–16 Northern Hemisphere components of the trivalent and quadrivalent vaccines

Midseason Vaccine Effectiveness Estimates for 2015-16 (2/24/16) • Overall influenza vaccine effectiveness 59% • 51 percent VE against the H1N1 viruses responsible for most flu illness this season • 76 percent VE against all influenza B viruses • 79 percent VE against the B/Yamagata lineage of B viruses • Not enough data to estimate VE by age group, nor to estimate VE against H3N2 viruses or B/Victoria lineage viruses

  9. 2016-17 Flu Vaccine components • Recommended composition of influenza virus vaccines for use in the 2016-2017 northern hemisphere influenza season • It is recommended that trivalent vaccines for use in the 2016-2017 influenza season (northern hemisphere winter) contain the following: • an A/California/7/2009 (H1N1)pdm09-like virus; • an A/Hong Kong/4801/2014 (H3N2)-like virus*; • a B/Brisbane/60/2008-like virus. • It is recommended that quadrivalent vaccines containing two influenza B viruses contain the above three viruses and • B/Phuket/3073/2013-like virus * Change from 2015-16 vaccine

  11. Current Mumps Outbreak • Multiple U.S. outbreaks reported in highly vaccinated populations • Intense exposure settings • Circulating outbreak G genotype • N.C. outbreak • 8 confirmed, 12 probable cases (5/02/2016) • Age range 19-50 years

  12. Nationally… • 19 states reporting mumps outbreaks on college campuses • As of 4/29/2016 – 727 cases reported to CDC • 2015: 1057 • 2014: 1223
