It is the smile of encouragement when the way seems hard. It is the helping hand when the burden becomes unbearable." — Peter E. Terzick What does the brotherhood of Masons mean? Freemasonry stands for a true “Brotherhood”. The fraternity of Free and Accepted Masons has members from every ethnic group and every continent in the world. Brotherhood is a primary teaching of Masonry--that each person must be judged as an individual, on his own merits, and that such factors as race, national origin, religious creed, social status, or wealth are incidental to the person's character. It means becoming a better person while helping to improve the quality of life for others. Brotherhood as a larger concept entails uniting all of humanity. It is about finding it in your heart to truly care about your fellow human beings and build them up, while allowing them to lift you up too when you need it. It means being part of an unbroken chain. A brother is anyone you can depend on, who you will do anything for. But most of all, being a Mason means the kind of deep satisfaction that comes only from selfless giving; from doing for others without asking, or expecting anything in return. Brotherhood involves taking the Masonic Principles, taught and nourished in the quiet, tranquil atmosphere of the Lodge, out into the busy world, right into the turmoil of the daily life of humanity, and promptly and intelligently applying them to the uplift of the needy, and by directing some rays of warm and cheery sunshine upon all who sit in the darkness.
