The Necessity of the Resurrection1 Corinthians 15 1 Corinthians is a letter of correction They were proud, arrogant & divided Problems included tolerance of flagrant sin, lawsuits, sexual immorality, legalism & abuse of Christian liberty, proper use of spiritual gifts They were confused about the Resurrection

  3. Summarizing the Gospel1 Corinthians 15:1-11 Paul will repeat himself – vs. 1-2 The core facts of the Gospel – vs. 3-4 Jesus died for our sins Jesus was buried Jesus was raised from the dead on the 3rd day Eyewitness of the Resurrected Jesus – vs. 5-8

  4. Saving Faith Faith must be in the correct object Faith in faith does not save It must be the Biblical Jesus – the one who is *God incarnate, *sinless, who *died as a substitute sacrifice for sin, was *buried, was *raised from the dead, *ascended to Heaven and will *return for His people

  5. Doubting the Resurrection1 Corinthians 15:12 Professing “Christians” who deny the resurrection: Theological Liberals – the “Swoon theory” Mystics – the “ghost theory” Evangelicals – who believe in reincarnation

  6. The Centrality of the Resurrection1 Corinthians 15:13-19 If there is no resurrection then: Jesus was not raised– vs. 13 Paul, etc. are false witnesses– vs. 14-16 Your faith is worthless– vs. 17 The dead have perished / are lost– vs. 18 We are to be most pitied– vs. 19

Affirming the Resurrection1 Corinthians 15:20-26 Paul declares the truth of the resurrection & explains we will follow His example This will happen at His coming – vs. 23f (Cf. 1 Thessalonians 4, etc.) Jesus will rule and finally even abolish death – vs. 25f (Cf. Revelation 20) Vs. 29-34 – The foolishness of living for Christ if there is no resurrection

  8. The Nature of the Resurrection Body1 Corinthians 15:35-49 It will be a real, physical body, but not like the perishable one we have now. 1 John 3:2 – it will be like Jesus’ body After the resurrection Jesus could be seen, be touched, eat, suddenly appear or disappear

  9. Our Resurrection Hope 1 Corinthians 15:50-58 Jesus’ resurrection has taken away the victory and sting of death Death Meets His Master – Elwood McQuaid

  10. Conclusions What you believe about the Resurrection affects your life Without its hope hedonism seems wise With it, we have confident assurance to today and tomorrow.
