  3. X-Treme Teens Goal • Provides a positive environment and allows youth to express themselves socially and actively. Youth gain a better understanding of themselves & personal growth in an environment where they are encouraged to express their thoughts and opinions.

  4. Program runs from September-June Meets every Tuesday 6:00-7:30 (depending on the topic, now and then we run over time) As of May 13, 2008 30 sessions have been executed Every Tuesday on an average we serve at least 13-20 youth, that range from 12-18 years of age After each Tuesday session a healthy meal is served to all participants Field Trips are also administered throughout the program X-treme Teens

Youth examine what it means to be “American in the eyes of people from other cultures Youth discover that cultural norms heavily influence how we communicate Youth examine that it is like to confront and deal with a culture highly different from their own) Youth will be able to describe how the concept of culture relates to their own experience Youth practice evaluating things of importance or beauty from different perspectives Youth will practice evaluating facts, bringing to bear their own experiences, preferences, and international contexts Youth examine how generalizations can be harmful and unfair, and they devise ways X-treme Teen Topics

DC RAPE & CRISIS CENTER Conflict Resolution (George Mason Students) Officer MD (DC Police Officer) Child Trends (Social Science Research Organization) 3 week workshop highlighting sexual assault, sexual harassment, teen-dating violence Youth Reconciliation Training “Satans Expose” a play focused on sex/abortion, violence/gangs, drugs, teen dating Focus Group on Romantic Relationships for Females ages 12-14 X-treme Teens Partnerships

OWL (Our Whole Lives) Goal • The OWL program creates a positive and comprehensive lifespan educational program that helps participants gain the knowledge, values, and skills they need to lead sexually healthy, responsible lives. OWL program values reflect self worth, sexual health, responsibility, justice and inclusivity

  8. OWL began during the summer of 2007. The purpose of the pilot OWL program for 7-9th graders was to offer a sexuality education module into the teen camp program The 10th-12th grade curriculum was implemented during the fall school year. Program runs from September-April 30, 2008 Meets every Wednesday from 6:00-8:00 pm As of May 13, 2008 26 classes were created in a structured agenda and completed. Besides myself the OWL program has 3 mentors, and 3 co-facilitators. Every Wednesday on an average we served at least 7-15 youth participants A light snack or dinner was served after every class Our Whole Lives

OWL Wrap-Up • On the weekend of Feb. 29th, 2008 Beacon House staff and OWL volunteers planned a full night of activities geared toward building healthy lives and relationships. • The following morning 17 youth participated in the 5th Annual Teen Dating Violence Conference. “Love Is Not a Battlefield.” (Youth were able to receive community service hours for this event) • On February 15, 2008 7 youth and chaperones traveled to American U to experience ”1 VDAY” The Vagina Monologues. (VDAY is a global movement to end violence against women and girls that raises funds and awareness through benefit production) • In November, 15 youth participated in a Planned Parenthood Informational Session and tour.

  11. TARGET 20 Goal Program Goal: • To provide Support, Service, and Opportunity to youth who are in the 10-12th grades! Youth will be engaged in: • Monthly meetings • College Tours & Fairs • Inner City Outings • Access to Mentors • Job Readiness Skills • College Preparation & Counseling • Trade School Information • Community Service Projects • Competitive Challenges • Career Exploration • Positive relationships with peers and adults • Leadership Development

TARGET 20 Wrap-Up • TARGET 20 meets weekly on an individual basis, and once every two months as a group • There are 23 TARGET 20 participants, 8 seniors, 10 juniors, 5 sophomores • Beacon House Hosted a Philadelphia College Tour in February 2007. Schools visited, Drexle U, Temple U, University of Penn • Beacon House Housed a New York College Tour in May 2008. Schools visited, French Culinary Institute, The Art Institute of New York, NYU • POSSEE Scholarship endeavor (4 youth applied) • Bill Gates Millennium Scholarship endeavor (2 youth applied) • Occasionally dinner meetings are scheduled to measure where each student is and plan upcoming events • Every month TARGET 20 participants earn community service hours by volunteering during study hall, recreation etc. • On February 21, 2008 three State Education counselors came to Beacon House to assist seniors with applying for the DCONE Scholarships.

  13. DPR/Beacon House Partnership • Beacon House staff are providing services to youth Monday-Friday from 4:00-9:00 pm. • Offering Study Hall, X-treme Teens, OWL, TARGET 20, Mentoring, Sports Tournaments, Open Recreation, Tuesday & Thursday Dinner Night, and Saturday Recreation & Sports Games. • Beacon House staff will also offer a six hour Camp and extended late night recreation during the summer. • As of today we have 67 youth registered and we average about 50-75 participants per day. • On April 15, 2008 we kicked off our DPR/Beacon House partnership by hosting a block party. Approximately 350 Community members, neighbors, families, youth and friends came out that day to celebrate the new Edgewood Rec. Center

  14. College Bound • Beacon House is a hosting site for College Bound. We have been in partnership with them for the last past seven years. • As of today there are 30 youth participants/partners, out of the 30 Beacon House has 5 youth in the program

  15. See Forever & Maya Angelou Interns • For the past four years Beacon House has partnered with Maya Angelou Public Charter School as an internship sponsor. By integrating in internship activities or projects at the workplace with school-based learning, students develop both job and academic skills

  16. CAMP LEAP 2008 • This summer, teens who participate in the Beacon House Teen Camp will be engaged in: • Community service projects • College readiness preparation • College tours • Life skills • Resume writing • Job readiness skills • Mentoring children • College bound resources

  17. Lawn Mowing Service Project • This April we were pleased to implement the BH Lawn Mowing Service Entrepreneurship Project. • As of today we have serviced 13 lawns and the numbers continue to grow • Their our 6 youth workers on staff and 1 youth scheduler/book keeper
