HVAC • HVAC stands for heating, “ventilating, and air conditioning” • HVAC systems are used to provide thermal comfort and acceptable indoor air quality • In data centers it keeps the equipment cool and humidity down
Data Center • A data center is a facility that is used to house computer systems and associated components • Data centers typically use from 20-100 watts per square foot and up to 400 watts per square foot
Data Center HVAC • HVAC uses approximately 25% of the power used in the data centers • So efficiency of the HVAC unit is very important because the power needed by the processors cannot be changed.
Energy Reducing • Have a more efficient HVAC unit • Keep the data center at a higher but less fluxing temperature • Use non-traditional methods of cooling • Use an ice or chilled water method that is cooled at night instead of during the day. • Use airside economizers which bring cool outside air in to supplement chillers.
