2/20/13- In order to insure the safety of students competing in the Maglev event, the following rule clarification will be in effect for all remaining Illinois Regionals and the Illinois State Tournament:All Maglev devices will have a switch to turn on and off the apparatus. The switch will be located far enough away from the propeller blades such that the student will not cut themselves on the propeller blades when operating the device. A switch must be used to start and stop the device; manually connecting the battery terminals via wires, alligator clips or connector ends during competition is not acceptable as a switch. If the event supervisor deems the device unsafe, or that the student is operating the device in an unsafe manner, then the event supervisor will stop the run attempt and not allow the student to complete a run. The same penalty for bringing no device to competition will be assessed: (-20 points)Micro switches are highly recommended due to their ease of operation. Switches that require holding on to the device to operate the switch may be deemed unsafe. Wood and metal propellers are not recommended for this event, but are left to the event supervisor to determine the overall safety of the apparatus.A release mechanism will be required for the event. The students will place something in front of the Maglev apparatus to hold it in place while the switch is operated. When instructed by the event supervisor, the release mechanism will be removed and the run will begin. The release mechanism can be something simple like a piece of wood that keeps the students hands away from the front of the apparatus and the spinning blades. A pencil has been used at invitationals, but it is found that they are not long enough to keep student hands from harm. Maglev (C) Clarification
I need Event Supervisors!! Anyone want to volunteer? Malcolm X Regional- Chicago
