  1. LDEO IIC 2010-11 • Summary of year’s activities • Forsyth/Wiens Recoveries • Cascadia Construction and TRM Deployment (testing) • Staffing • Upcoming plans/schedule • Cascadia deep deployment (2011) • Mariana deployment (2012) • Chile deployment (2012) • Cascadia recoveries/turnaround (2012) • Development • Completed/ongoing projects • Future projects

  2. Forsyth Recoveries (S of Shatsky) Faulty burnwires: Sites 9, 12, 14? Sites 2, 5: implosion or early release ?

  3. Wiens Lau Recoveries • 21 of 22 recovered • 13 had OBMs • OK performance, • Some bad channels • Depth restriction 5000 m • No low-pressure leaks

  4. Inventories (instruments and people) • ~29 standard OBS (5 TCs; 24 L4s) • 30 (20 TRM; 10 standard) in Cascadia fleet (considerable overlap in design) • People: 3 core, 5 peak • Engineer Gassier • Engineer Koczynski • Technician Oletu • Technicians Stolzmann, Brusa

  5. Cascadia Construction/Deployment 2 test cruises in LI Sound (battery issues; instrument survived 3’ drop) Corrosion test in LI sound Made decision early 2011 to add popup buoys Construction: Possible TRM delays became apparent ~ April/May Steel supplier/coater overwhelmed (19 tons in 900 pcs) Estimated 5+ instruments ready for deployment cruise 10 standard Cascadia OBSs on track for October 2011

  6. New standard OBS

  7. TRM OBS

  8. Cascadia Deployment 15 delivered for cruise

  9. TRM Deployment Cruise July, 2011 15 deployed 9 with popups Heave challenges 1 TRM fell 1 tilted 1 recovered Some had temperature sensors Major fishing collaboration

  10. TRM Recovery

  11. 2011-12 Activities • Cascadia Standard deployment, October 2011 • Mariana experiment (Wiens) Jan/Feb 2011 • 10 standard OBSs • 5 moored instruments • Temperature sensors ? • Chile experiment (Trehu) April/May 2011 • 10 standard OBSs • Flowmeters • Cascadia Recoveries/Turnaround [All summer…]

  12. Completed Development • Switched to Trillium Compact leveling system in Al tube • TRMs developed and built • OBS dataloggers redesigned: batteries separated • APG dataloggers incorporated into OBSs • TRM deployment/recovery approaches

  13. 2011-12 Development Directions • New FPGA for APG logger • Atomic clocks • TRM tweaks • Mariana moored instruments • Adding SIO flowmeters to standard OBSs • Incorporate broadband sensor • New OBS datalogger • Deep OBS

  14. Issues • Confidence has increased (5 years) • But… recognize need to consolidate. • Last year, working flat-out. May be false economy given per-instrument and data costs. • Data: Backlog is critical problem. First Forsyth experiment site to DMC yesterday.
