  2. Agenda • What happened at Aviation 2014? • Subcommittee Status and Plans • Preparation for General GEPC Teleconon July 14th • Preparation for P&E14

  3. Aviation 2014 Sessions • Link to GEPC Sharepoint - Conference Subcommittee You can also view the document in the GEPC Sharepoint – Conference Subcommittee ..”Sessions of GEPC Interest at AV14.xlsx

  4. Rich Wahls – Notes from Aviation 2014 FYI - decided over the course of the week ... AVIATION 2015 General Chair is ... Me, and the Integration Tier Chair is .... Robb Gregg. At Aviation2014, the first meeting of the technical program planning committee for Aviation 2015 was held (I could not attend - and I did not have my 2015 role by then). I'm told most TC/PC did NOT have someone identified as lead for AV15 yet - so did/most did not. BUT THE FIRST DRAFT FOR CALL FOR PAPERS IS JULY 23 PER CATHY C at AIAA who is the AIAA project manager for Aviation 2015. IF GEPC wants to to be in the loop for the Call for Papers, or for getting a room for any invited sessions --- I suggest you contact cathyc@aiaa.org right this week. Even if GEPC does not call for papers or create invited sessions, I think the GEPC should think about and submit an idea to Robb/me for an integration tier session - we will put it in the mix and see what happens... by the way, I believe that soon (maybe even at P&E), the integration tier name will change to something like "Forum 360" to emphasize the "conversational aspect" and because "integration" means different things to different people. At the GEPC meeting at P&E14 in Cleveland, and can give a 10 minute overview of the Aviation2014 Integration Tier Program if you like. For SciTech14 - we had the N+3 session info input before the abstract deadlilne, so FJ should be able to session it. it has you (Marty) at 60 minutes oral only, followed by 4 30 minutes presentations by the MIT team (one is from P&W) - 1 is oral only, the other 3 are papers including the P&W one. rich

  5. Actions from March 2014 Leadership Team Meetings • Each subcommittee lead needs to schedule a meeting telecon for their subcommittee members sometime in April • Each subcommittee lead to send items for newsletter to Tayo Ladeinde • Danielle Soban to develop summary of Aviation 2014 conference sessions/presentations of interest to GEPC members • Sivaram Gogineni to send wording for request to membership (and newsletter) to help with ideas for finding green engineering related nominees for other AIAA awards. • Sivaram Gogineni to contact other TC and PC award committees to talk about green engineering related emphasis and nominees

  6. Status of SciTech15 Abstracts

  7. Questions from Jeff Hamstra on New Areas for Growth AIAA P&E Leaders; Each group director has been asked to provide input to the three questions poised in the note below.  We talked about this during the TAC telecon last week, and Sandy provided some additional comments to clarify the request.  If you can spare a few moments, please respond to this note with your thoughts in regards to the P&E Forum and I’ll compile.  Any format of input is fine, but please respond by June 24.  Restating the questions: • Technical areas/topics that are as not as well represented as you think they should be given the discipline and the work going on in related fields. • Technical areas where you think a forum has potential to grow and the Technical and Program Committees you think could help drive papers and attendance. • Any potential impacts you see for forum attendance such as competitive events or factors that impact Technical and Program Committee participation in a forum. Jeff Hamstra

  8. P&E 2015 Abstracts Greetings P&E Forum 2015 Technical Area Organizers, Cathy Chenevey (AIAA) has provided the topic-area template (attached) for the P&E Forum 2015 call-for-extended-abstracts. AIAA is continuing to converge upon this common format/template for the Forums. As I mentioned in my May 19 email, I’d like to have draft call for the topic areas available in time for our Jul 29 Technical Program Committee meeting at the P&E Forum 2014. So please aim to complete the draft call and send to me by Jul 25. We will have some time to finalize the calls in Aug. Again, it is good to work the call for abstracts with your respective TC and PC membership with a perspective of, What should be emphasized today? As noted on the spreadsheet, you are free to include a more lengthy/descriptive narrative to support your topic area. If desired, please do so as a Word document. The narrative will be available (electronically) as a .pdf, linked to your section of the call. I appreciate your patience in waiting for this template, and will appreciate your timely response. Please contact me with any questions. Please note that I have copied the TC/PC Chairs, and Jason Smith (GE Aviation) and Michael Choi (NASA GSFC), who have graciously agreed to serve as P&E Forum 2015 Deputy Technical Program Chairs for the Aviation and for Energy, respectively. I hope to see you at our P&E Forum 2015 Technical Program Committee meeting, Tues, Jul 29, 1530-1700 hrs., at the P&E Forum 2014. I will be in touch with additional information as we approach our Jul 29 meeting. Best regards, Jerry Dr. Gerard E. WelchGerard.E.Welch@nasa.gov

  16. Charter The purpose of the Green Engineering Program Committee (GEPC) is to promote a holistic, systems approach to improved energy efficiency, sustainability, renewable energy and ‘cradle-to-cradle’ design. GEPC serves as the AIAA focal point for all “green” aerospace-related programs and technologies, and works synergistically with the appropriate technical committees to assure that the AIAA membership is adequately informed about all aspects of this critical aerospace activity.

  34. AIAA Experts Database Currently, the AIAA Communications Team is updating our Industry Experts Database, found at this link:   http://www.aiaa.org/IndustryExperts.aspx?id=4746.   The AIAA database lists those members of Technical and Program Committees, by discipline, who are willing to provide technical help to the media and other interested, official, parties (writers, etc.)., or speak to other AIAA members about their fields of endeavor.  Recently, for instance, the database was used to find experts willing to talk about how satellites interpret telemetry from commercial airliners to help reporters better understand technical documents put out by the Malaysian government in the wake of their recent aviation disaster. AIAA members regularly use the database to find contact information for subject matter experts to either obtain advice or guidance about research pursuits, or to initiate collaboration between members. Over time, the database has become an important communication tool which has furthered the public’s knowledge about aerospace. To be in the database, you should be willing and able to speak with the media, or with other interested parties; be a subject matter expert in a particular discipline; and allow us to list you in the database.   If you would be interested in being listed in our database, please contact Duane Hyland  at duaneh@aiaa.org with your name, e-mail, and subject area you wish to be listed as an expert in. If you are currently in our database and would like to be removed, please let Duane know as well. Thank you for helping the Institute maintain this critical tool. 44. New Standard for Review Dear TC/PC Chairs and Vice-Chairs: Please see the below notice concerning the new standard available for public review. If appropriate, please forward to members on your committee. If you have any questions, please contact Amy Barrett at amyb@aiaa.org. Thanks. Betty __________________________________________________________________________________________ New Standard Available for Public Review: Qualification and Quality Requirements for Space Solar CellsThe AIAA Solar Cells and Solar Panels Committee on Standards has revised the standard Qualification and Quality Requirements for Space Solar Cells and it is now available for public review and comment. The original standard was published in 2005.  Key revisions include the option of using displacement damage dose methodology to define radiation effects, qualification of cells for any trajectory as opposed to separate tests that confined qualification to just low earth orbit or geosynchronous earth orbit, definitions of minimum success criteria for each test, and characterizations to collect sufficient data to predict electrical performance at a given stage of mission life. As with the previous version, the standard defines terminology and establishes uniform processes, procedures, and systematic methods for verifying the capability of a photovoltaic device to operate in a relevant space environment. This standard applies to all solar cells which operate in space.  If interested in reviewing this document, please visit the link below.
