What is Biology? • Biology is the study of all living things, from cells to ecosystems. • Organism: any living thing.
All Organisms are made of Cells • All living things are composed of cells. • In multicellular organisms, cells are specialized to play a specific role. • What types of cells are these?
All Organisms Need and Use Energy • All living things use energy through metabolism: sum of all the chemical processes that occur in an organism. • Some organisms produce their own energy while others must consume it.
All Organisms Respond to their Environment • All living things must maintain stable internal conditions. • This is called homeostasis.
All Organisms Pass on DNA from Parent to Offspring • All living reproduce in order to pass on DNA. • DNA: stores genetic information in all organisms. • Development: process by which an adult organism arises.
Reproduction • All species of an organism have the ability to reproduce. • Reproduction is not essential to survival, but ensures continuation of a species.
