  3. Mapping Workshop - Printing 6 October 2011 1 IOF Guidelines for using non-offset printed maps in WRE’s 1.1 Using the PrintTech test sheet to check for: • Colours to Pantone & test sheet • Even colours, no striping • Print quality ie sharpness to edges • Vertical & horizontal accuracy • Do contour lines have the same appearance over the colour screens ie often a problem over mid & dark green • No moire effect • Etc, as per instruction sheet available on OA web • Test print sheets available here • OCAD & PDF files available on OA web

  4. Mapping Workshop - Printing 6 October 2011 1 IOF Guidelines for using non-offset printed maps in WRE’s 1.1 Using the PrintTech test sheet • Use colour blocks on the map to check against the PrintTech colour sheet Colours to Pantone & test sheet

  6. Mapping Workshop - Printing 6 October 2011 1 IOF Guidelines for using non-offset printed maps in WRE’s 1.3 Approval process • Event Advisor to check quality • If OK 3 course maps and 3 ‘test sheets’ sent to MC • 3 months notice required 3 months notice required • MC will either: • approve • suggest how to make improvements • reject

  7. Mapping Workshop - Printing 6 October 2011 2 Review & discussion of maps printed for recent carnivals 2.1 2009 Australian Champs, Northern Spurs, VIC

  8. Mapping Workshop - Printing 6 October 2011 2 Review & discussion of maps printed for recent carnivals 2.2 2010 Australian Champs, Tanunda Creek, SA

  9. Mapping Workshop - Printing 6 October 2011 2 Review & discussion of maps printed for recent carnivals 2.2 2010 Australian Champs, Tanunda Creek, SA What the MC said: • I am wondering if there is a problem with the paper, as the tiny font black text on the map is quite blurry (or are these scanned images?). • Font changed to graphic • Contours get fussy and appear a bit thin, partly due to a slight colour misalignment (black is a bit SW of magenta / yellow), but are readable in the white areas. • Printer issue • No overprint effect. This causes readability problems, in particular in the green areas (contours and blue features). To achieve overprinting effect when printing directly from OCAD, all one has to do is to use the spot colour view while printing (then only the spot colour colour definitions are used - the CMYK values in the big colour table are ignored). • Issues with overlapping areas, colours for logos and map colour settings

  10. Mapping Workshop - Printing 6 October 2011 2 Review & discussion of maps printed for recent carnivals 2.2 2010 Australian Champs, Tanunda Creek, SA What the MC said: • Courses are not printed transparent (overprinted). They should be! This is also easily achievable using the draft mode when printing courses in OCAD. • Agree • Colours are not bad. Purple is good! The green is perhaps slightly too blueish. Have you checked how this combination of yellow colour and green colour is perceived by colour blinds? • I think OK! • High quality plastic bags! • Great

  11. Mapping Workshop - Printing 6 October 2011 2 Review & discussion of maps printed for recent carnivals 2.3 2011 Frazzle Rock Easter carnival, WA Printer: Igen 4 Fuji Xerox machine on to Master Laser 100 gsm bond paper at a 200 dot process setting. Purple Pen used. Ref: Report by Richard Matthews, Controller

  12. Mapping Workshop - Printing 6 October 2011 2 Review & discussion of maps printed for recent carnivals 2.3 2011 Frazzle Rock Easter carnival, WA What the MC said: • Overall, the quality of the printing is good. • The resolution of the printer is quite good, and seems to be sufficient for 1:10000 maps. • The colours are also quite good, but to me, yellow seems to be a bit pale and with slightly too much magenta. • There is no overprint effect. With spot colour PDF, it should be possible to specify overprinting in the file. • But then you will have to inform the printer about the spot colours used. I know this was done for the WOC 2010 maps. http://lazarus.elte.hu/mc/article/omapprintingar.pdf

  13. Mapping Workshop - Printing 6 October 2011 2 Review & discussion of maps printed for recent carnivals 2.3 2011 Frazzle Rock Easter carnival, WA What the MC said: • The course overprinting is not transparent. With EPS, I guess you have to ask the printer to implement the overprinting effect in order to accomplish this. PDF is a possibility. • Have you done any investigations into FM (frequency modulated) raster / stochastic raster? It is used for CMYK offset printing of orienteering maps in Switzerland, and some advanced RIPs for laser printers support this. • The results are generally much better than regular rasters for orienteering maps.

  14. Mapping Workshop - Printing 6 October 2011 3 Preparing maps for printing 3.1 Map tests for the 2011 Aust Champs, Marginata , ACT

  15. Mapping Workshop - Printing 6 October 2011 3 Preparing maps for printing 3.2 Technical papers presented as prepared by Ken Dowling • See Mapsport web page for papers http://www.mapsport.com.au/mapping-resources/

  16. Mapping Workshop - Printing 6 October 2011 3 Preparing maps for printing 3.3 PDF image format • Portable Document Format is now the industry’s standard file format • OCAD will export PDF as Vector or Raster • PDF Vector is essential for high quality map printing Raster Vector

  17. Mapping Workshop - Printing 6 October 2011 3 Preparing maps for printing 3.3 PDF image format • Vector images • have points connected with lines (straight or curved) and filled with a colour • are infinitely scaleable • CorelDRAW, Adobe Illustrator & OCAD are vector based programs • Raster images • Are made from thousands of dots (pixels) • CorelPAINT, AdobePhotoShop

  18. Mapping Workshop - Printing 6 October 2011 3 Preparing maps for printing 3.3 PDF image format • Maps with out Background raster images will automatically be exported by OCAD as vector and create settings in the PDF file for best reproduction • Raster images (ie .jpg) used as a Background map will cause OCAD to automatically export the PDF file as a raster image. OCAD will also ask for a Raster resolution to be entered ie 300dpi • Raster images should be redrawn in OCAD or obtain the image in an OCAD importable file format such as ai,.pdf, .emf, .wmf, +

  19. Mapping Workshop - Printing 6 October 2011 3 Preparing maps for printing 3.3 PDF image format • Do not use PDF raster files as the print quality is inferior to vector. • Also, high resolution raster files are very large in file size.

  20. Mapping Workshop - Printing 6 October 2011 3 Preparing maps for printing 3.4 Overprint / transparency from CMYK digital printers • Printing from OCAD • Overprinting effect of the course achievable by Course file: View > Draft: both sliders to the RHS • Transparency possible but proven to be unsatisfactory • Printing from PDF • CMYK offset digital printing requires the O(verprint) column in the colour table to be checked • Use Export PDF in OCAD to create PDF vector • Refer to Ken Dowling’s technical papers

  21. Mapping Workshop - Printing 6 October 2011 3 Preparing maps for printing 3.5 Printing direct from OCAD • Printing from OCAD has two big advantages: • One file for all courses whereas PDF requires a separate file to be created for each course and; • relay course leg maps and team combinations are automatically handled by OCAD both at the printing stage and also for importing into OS (Sportident timing & management) • Only one known Print Shop in Australia currently prints from OCAD ie Snap Printing, Hilton, SA • Tasmania has own printer

  22. Mapping Workshop - Printing 6 October 2011 4 Paper & waterproof paper 4.1 Paper • Suitable paper • Impress DM Matt, 100gsm • Colour Copy 100gsm • Mondi Colour Copy, 120 gsm Nb Plastic bag thickness of 100 microns suitable with 100 gsm paper • Suitable waterproof paper • Teslin 150gsm • Pretex 50.120 (120gsm)
